It's interesting that US/Western policy has been favouring Sunni Islamism ove Shia Islam.
At present Sunni states such as Yemen and Saudi Arabia are conducting brutal suppression of Shia Muslims in these countries. In some instances this is on par with Syria - air support used to bomb Shia villages and towns in Yemen.
In addition Shia Muslims were suppressed in Bahrain by the minority Sunni population with support from Saudi Arabia and UAE.
In all instances thus oppression has the approval or even military/financial support of the US/West.
At the same time, the West is supporting Sunni rebellions against Shia subsect Allawites in Syria and also supported suppression of Shias in Iraq.
A lot of commentators have observed that at present there is a wider regional conflict between Sunnis and Shias in the form of Iran v Gulf oil states.
With Saudi Arabia (#1 funder of terrorism and home of Al Qadea) being regarded as an American ally, it would appear that the West/US has taken sides with Sunnis.
