Personally, from what we've seen of the oil depot fire the past few days, we're damn lucky it wasn't a nuclear plant. Anti, I don't mind windmills.

Windmills are fucking pointless, they ruin the scenery and are built of a shitload of metal which costs and you need A LOT of them to get decent amount of power. The way to go is nuclear power, of course we need to be very cautious in its use...

I think it's far too risky. We've got waves and wind, let's use them. So what the countryside gets covered with windmills, better that than my children get leukemia.

Nuclear power is pollutant and unsustainable.

We can find a way through research for the pollution problem though.

Ooooh I'd have to say "Bad" cause, like, nuclear power is evil. And probably run by capitalists. Man capitalists are evil. Yeah, definitely "Bad".

Although I do like windmills.

I support nuclear power, if you are cautious and put enough money into security and research, the risks are very small.
The waste will probably not be a problem for much longer either, of what I have heard they are almost done developing a way to transform the substances with long lifetime into shortlifed or stable substances.

Nope, just kill a few billion people.

I voted "good," but it's a far more complicated issue than that. It doesn't pollute, and it is far more efficient than fossil fuels, but there is the issue of the waste. Ideally, you'd store it in leakproof barrels in a geologically stable area with impermeable ground until the radioactive stuff decays to an inert state. Unfortunately, that sort of setup doesn't usually exist in real life. No part of the world is 100% geologically inactive (duh) and human error can always occur (as we've seen with Three Mile Island and Chernobyl). However, when you consider what we're doing to the planet with fossil fuels (not to mention the politics behind them) it does become a viable alternative. Ideally, of course, we'd have some form of alternative energy source (solar, wind, or something else we've yet to discover) but nuclear is the most viable at this point in time.

Is this your new shtick, the whole 'anti Zad' thing? 'Cause it's getting old even faster than Zad's spontaneous leftist proselytizing.

Nuclear power? Well... I'd consider it a temporary alternative while we search for a more stable and useful solution. Solar looks like a pipe dream, but it would be great.

i voted good, i'd very much like to see some statistics regarding the cost per unit of nuclear power, and of wind/tide power. on the security issue, i think with suitable vigilance nuclear power is exceptionally safe and clean.

in france roughly 75% of power is provided by nuclear power stations, and they have never had a SERIOUS accident.

as a resident of jersey, most of my power is nuclear (cable from france), and i can tell you, its damn good power!

Nuclear power is AWESOME! It can blow lots of shit up without too much fuss.

I think we should attach windmills to the front of commercial aircraft. That way it eliminates the ugliness assosciated with the Dutch, and it provides a protective barrier against birds; just like the deflector dish on the front of the Enterprise.

Better yet, we could attach electricity generators to the mouths of Islamic Fundamentalists. They spend an awful amount of energy shouting stupid shit all day long and that energy simply dissipates into the air before it finds any kind of use. Therefore we can have fields of Jihadists with devices attached to their mouths, and in front we have a video screen which shows such offensive shit as a Jew catching a bus, a girl smiling, a man shaving, the theory of evolution, and someone minding their own business. They scream their rage into the mouthpiece, which collects the energy to power washing machines and public transport. You could even stop at a local Jihad station and pick up crazy fuck to power your car. It's clean, efficient, and since stupidity is the fastest growing religion in the world it is renewable.

Actually, no.

If you want a serious answer, then I my opinion sits somewhere between Carnifex' and yours. Nuclear power clearly has its drawbacks, but if handled carefully then it is the way forward until something better is figured out.

Disasters like Chernobyl are the obviously one of the main reasons why caution has to be extreme, but errors like this one have been few and far between, and turning our backs on a viable (and probably necessary over the next 50 years) power alternative because of past carelessness is hardly a progressive attitude.

The more serious and immediate issue is the environmental consequences of the disposal of waste. Nuclear power cannot be used on a broad scale until the waste is more easily managed.

I'd say possibly the biggest drawback of all, however, would be politics. Oil magnates are not going to be happy to see alternative solutions to their virtual monopoly. But, since fossil fuels aren't going to last forever something eventually has to change. Hopefully by then nuclear power will be safer as it is the most efficient presently existing alternative.

I found this yesterday. For all those who think that nuclear power is worth the risk, take a look at these. These are babies deformed from the results of using depleted uranium in warfare, from Iraqi and Gulf War Veteran's children. This is just from DU, imagine how bad it could get. Chernobyl is still a hot zone, and I heard there's another one leaking over there at the moment as well. This isn't more liberal bullshit, just something you should be aware of.

WARNING: These pictures are not nice. It probably won't make you sick, but it will destroy any good moods. So, if you don't want to see dead and deformed babies, don't click here . Simple as that.

that's nuclear warfare, not nuclear power for "common" use.

it just needs better security and (important detail here) better pr.

of course, Sir Wanksalot still presented the most viable solution. someone make him king!

It's radiation. Still causes stuff like that to happen, it's a fact that children living near Nuclear power stations are more likely to get cancer.
