| Post subject: | What song are you learning to play? |
I'm trying to learn "Night Crawler" by Judas Priest. I'm relatively new to the guitar, but I've managed to get the opening riff down, although it still sounds completely butchered. Anyway, are there any more noobs like me learning how to play a song? Or even an expert trying to master a song? Btw, Specify the instrument you play. |

I am trying to play "26-2", "Giant Steps" and "Countdown" (All Coltrane) on the ol' saxophone... Actually this is what I've being trying to do for the best part of a decade now. Getting.... slowly........closer. |

"My Favourite Things" isn't a Coltrane song, but I hope you'll agree he plays it in his own style. How do you know I am not trying to play Giant Steps in my own way? 
b) Technique is crucial in jazz! Totally irrespective of my own individual music, I want to have a competitive technique. I will know I have achieved this, once I can play some good solos over those songs

I've been scouring around for the easiest songs to play for the bass. So far, I've got Lacuna Coil's "Heaven's A Lie" and Rammstein's "Klavier" down pretty well. And as much as I want to, I probably won't be playing any Dream Theater or Cryptopsy anytime soon. I'll probably have more soon, though. |

I will know I have achieved this, once I can play some good solos over those songs a) I know that.... b)but maybe you're not fit to play exactly like Coltrane did... there's a reason why there are so few virtuosi like him and, though I'd be very happy for you to reach that level of excellence, I think you have to be realistic.. you're not Trane ! so play Countdown your own way (the best you can of course), record it and send me an mp3... I'd like to hear that !

Learning to play the new stuff I'm writing for my band (I'm on bass, btw). I want to try something different this time, but since I'm not that technical at all (not that these songs could be defined "technical" anyway) I'm having a tough time. Still, I feel like I'm trying to push my limits further, and that's good. |
