Okay so instead of totally altering other peoples threads ::cough:: :D I figured I'd start an anime thread for anyone who wanted to talk about their favorite shows, soundtracks from shows, movies, animators, the process, etc. Alright, so this isn't too well thought out or elaborate like some of the threads around here but I'm used to posting in a folder called "Inchoherant Babbling" elsewhere, you've got to give me some time to convert back to intelligence again @_@ haha rock and roll guys.

I like Miyazaki movies, but that's about it.

The shows generally have terrible dialogue and convulted cliche stories. And 90% of them have crappy animation. I can't stand anime nerds obsessed with the lame shows. "Oh, I need to go watch 'Love Hina'". That show makes me cringe it's so terrible and unfunny.

I like anime. Akira is one of the best movies I have ever seen.

Favorites: Ghost in the Shell 1 and SAC, Bastard!, Battle Angel, FullMetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, Devil Hunter Yohko, Voltron, the first Gundam series, Samurai Champloo, Legendary Gambler Tetsuya, anything from Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki....that's it for now.

Any metalhead who likes anime should see Bastard! All the names of places, people, even fucking martial arts attacks are taken from 80's metal bands. The demon Anthrathrax, the warlord Kai Hanson and the giant fireball called Megadeth had me on my ass laughing. There is even a villian called King Diamond who wears identical face makeup and a top hat. It's hard to find but it's worth it. One of the best anime series I've ever watched. 6-8 episodes I think.

For the most part I'd agree. But Hayao Miyazaki is an amazing director. I am a fan of animation (since I'm a 2d flash animator myself) and a huge film buff, and his work is amazing. In story and characters as well as animation.

Here's my thoughts...

Grave of the Fireflies is one of the greatest movies ever, no matter what country, animated or real. All those who disagree have no taste in movies. Also, Now and Then, Here and There is a great sci-fi series, and Read or Die kicks ass as a fucked up asian version of James Bond.

Though, anime as a whole it upmostly g a y. Though, as a side note, I used to be an anime geek. I think it was about the time Inuyasha came on television that I finally realised this. I still watch Inuyasha, but it's in an ironic, Mystery Science Theater way because that show is so bad, it's funny.

I'm impartial to it myself. I don't like it when people obsess over something just because it's from Japan, but then again I hate it when people say they hate anime because it makes them look more badass to say they don't like a certain fad or trend.

I could be way off, but I don't see the difference between anime and anything else on TV with the exception of the art style and the fact that it's generally more adult-oriented.

I don't like watching cartoons, and I just don't like it, and have no interest in it.

I didnt like that movie all that much.. I mean, the animation was good and stuff like that but personally, I didn't like the whole thing where the basic ending to the movie is known 2 minutes into the movie, it made it so I really didn't care for the characters because I was just waiting to see how it happened. Had they taken the scene at the beginning out, I would probably like it abit more. And just cuz I dont like that movie very much does not mean I have no taste, I like what I like.

Anyways.. My favorite anime consists of: Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Laputa, Akira, Ghost In The Shell, Ninja Scroll, Perfect Blue, Naruto, Azumanga Daioh, 2x2 = Shinobuden, Bobobo, Star Ocean EX, Berserk, Full Metal Alchemist.. Also I prefer to see them all in their original language, dubs are usually always bad.. Though the Miyazaki films usually have good ones.

Yeah, I know you have taste. I just felt like exagerating. Though I did think that how the begining was done didn't hinder the movie at all, it had the same emotional impact weither it was there or not, at least, to me.

I understand that, I've known people who really liked that movie. The scenes were very emotional and powerful, but to me just already knowing what happens kind of makes me not care. It's not really a bad movie, just something that I wont really watch ever again on my own.

I like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Miyazaki movies. That's about all I consider good enough to watch.

I will, however, try to find that anime you mentioned, Jay. Sounds hilarious.

Bastard!! is well animated and has a really decent plot in addition to the funny naming schemes. I think you'll like it.

This link is to the entry about Bastard!! at Anime Database. It's a six episode series and there is a plot outline there too. Episode four is even called "The Immortal King Diamond."

I don't know how I forgot to mention Ninja Scroll, Blood and Vampire Hunter D earlier.

Bastard!! was amazing. The thing about OAV's is that most of the time unless you go around looking for a new title to soak up you're not going to pay attention to it. Titles like Princess Mononoke and Ninja Scroll will pop up, and if we're talking series' probably Cowboy Bebop and Neon Genisis Evangelion. Americans are getting a good fill of anime through [adult swim] on cartoon network, but the dubbed versions of some shows are just terrible. My sister got the Yu Yu Hakusho movie for christmas and couldn't believe how poorly it was done. She was also dissapointed that Justin Cook who voices [in the dub] Yusuke didn't do him in the film. I haven't watched it myself. I got the first Inuyasha movie dubbed for Christmas but I've either been too busy too lazy or too tired to watch that one yet. Speed Racer was probably the first anime I saw way back in the day. Sailor Moon was the first series I watched that I knew was anime at all, and I admit I was a hardcore fangirl for that show :P

You mensioned Vampire Hunter D, are you referring to the original or bloodlust? Personally I like Bloodlust much better. ^_^ but that's just me.

They were both good but I thought Bloodlust was better as well. I still have yet to see the uncensored version of the first so my opinion may not be fully complete.

I love anime. Miyazaki's films are my favorites (see: avatar), but I enjoy many others aside from his films. Some current and all time favorites are: One Piece, Cowboy Bebop, Metropolis, Millennium Actress, Akira, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Memories, Azumanga Daioh, FLCL, and many others.

Anyone who says they hate all anime has not given it enough of a chance. Saying "I hate anime" is akin to saying "I hate movies" or "I hate music". There is such a staggering range of anime out there, both in terms of subject material and overall quailty, that unless you have some illogical bias against all forms of animation, there is at least one anime title you will like.

Azumanga Dioah is a really cute show, the first time I saw it I had gotten a thirty minute episode from Newtype USA (really rad anime zine) and I was hooked, I needed to find more and eventually I ended up with the sub even though originally I was exposed to the dub and that usually irritates the hell out of me when I'm already used to something like that. But this one was just great, it's adorable, it's all about the characters and I can't wait to get my hands on the manga this year.
