...And I have a few questions...

1) How much does your regular iPod cost? I don't want any special fancy Nano or Video bullshit, I just want a standard iPod.

2) How many hours of music does it hold? And that roughly equals about how many albums?

3) Anything else I should know?

4) No I don't want to hear any bullshit about how mp3 playing devices are untrue and you just don't get the same sound quality.

I presume?

getting an alternative brand mp3 player could be a good idea, I only have a teeny Rio device but it cost hardly anything and you can drag media straight onto it like a drive instead of having to foozle around iTunes.

To answer the questions:

1. Depends on where you get it. eBay has some cheaper ones ($100-$200 that satisfy the "gimme the basics") request. If you buy a new one (which I recommend, the backlight is insanely nice) depending on the size (20 or 60 gig) it runs from $300 to $400.

2. Depends on the size. Runs from "a lot" to "a fuckton." 30 gigs is around 500 albums, I think. This is just an estimate, though, as I'm too lazy to plug mine into my computer to actually find out (it's 60 gigs and about halfway full).

3. If you order one from the Apple site, you get free engraving. Mine says "BLAZIN' COD NUGGETS ARE KRIEG" on the back. Because it amuses me.

I think it is fucking amazing especially combined with very good creative headphones.. (the ones that remain pressurized in your ears..)

Their very nice mp3 players but I have a friend who's been through about 4 of them due to them messing up. I don't know if he has bad luck with them or they commonly have problems like that.

The Shuffle is indeed one of the stupidest ideas ever.

They reported on the radio where I live that at one point there was a near epidemic of people getting mugged and beaten up for their Ipods. Something to keep in mind. (see also Azrael)

Screw iPod. Granted they're nice and all, but you'll pay a premium for the iPod name.

If you want some useful features, but don't need all the "fluff" bells & whistles, go with a Creative Zen Xtra. I have the 60GB model, and paid $209 for it. The software is easy enough to use (based on Windows Explorer), the battery lasts for 8-12 hours, and is removeable. As far as value for your money, you probably won't beat this. Bear in mind, this is a hard drive based MP3 player, so you can't run with it, do jumping jacks, backflips, etc.... I find it to be very useful for me while in the gym, at work, and in the car....

60gb, 209 $? OMFG!
It has to have some negative aspects, but from what you listed it doesn't seem to have many.

Excellent, that's three people now have given me glowing endorsemnts for these little (big) bad boys.

I'll order one soon I think, my minidisc player is on the verge of falling apart again and my warranty only runs to August.

I have the exact same piece of equipment as well. And like Dee says, being able to just drag and delete media files into it like an exernal hard drive is a big bonus over iPods: which seem complicated to my puny mind. :x

the ipod has the totally awesome CLICK WHEEL THING. it's brilliant.

i heard the Creative's interface isn't as good, other than that it's an equally solid player.

owning an ipod myself, the player is good and fairly resistant, the interface is great and itunes is good to use as a default player on the computer too. plus, you can store other files on the ipod and transfer them... i think.

the downsides are the battery, which isn't replaceable (i think you have to send it back to apple - but i've had mine for over a year i think, and no problems at all) and the price (but you can get the older models fairly cheap on ebay).

i have the 20gb one, no colours or video or anything. i have 16.73GB of it full - 2862 songs.

Same here. My good old discman does its job well enough.

And Legacy OTN I really don't suggest you buy an iPod, they might be hip but from what I hear they aren't very user friendly, Creative Zen is prolly a better choice like some people said.

I've got a Sony NW-HD5

Image

20gb, line out, nice interface, removable battery, 14hrs of playtime roughly, great sound.

Works like a charm for me.
