I think a lot of that comes from things beyond our control, however. I'm traveling to Scandinavia in about a month, and just a little research on the Eurorail system explains a lot of our differences. Europeans have tremendous and (from my perspective) exciting access to other peoples and cultures in just an hour or two's train trip. We Americans are stuck with thousands of miles (more thousands KM ) or sameness. Many of you learn English and other languages: we Americans are under no real pressure to learn anything. We also have been nutured with the mentality that America is the greatest country in the world, while I get the notion that many of you Euros are raised much more cyncially towards your country. None of these factors are necessarily anyone's fault, although I wish more Americans were aware of these differences.
