This question is directed at the European audience of this site, but needs to be prefaced by a brief story...

I've been travelling around Asia for the past year and a half, and as I went from country to country, people would always ask me if I was German. There's nothing really wrong with that, as I would always throw out odd guesses at peoples nationalities myself, but after a while I started to notice an odd trend in the conversation..

Random Traveller: Excuse me, are you German? *chuckle chuckle*
Me: Um... no. Why?
RT: Oh, no reason... BWA HA HA HA HA HA *riotous laughter*

The people who laughed the hardest were usually Scandinavians. Now, my questions is: what's wrong with being German? Is there some joke about Germans going around Europe? Did Germany lose a really really important soccer match to a Scandinavian country? (yeah, they didn't win the world cup, but neither did anyone in Scandinavia)
I didn't mind the laughter at first, but after a while I started to get a bit paranoid...

Either World War 2, or the old 'Germans have no sense of humour' line. The first, get over it, the second simply isn't true.

i think there's also a funny image of the german traveler. I see them down here all the time and you can tell immediatly if they're german or not. They're pale, also in pizza places, at the beach, very organized. same with americans. shorts, sneakers and t-shirts with some product advertised. and I must say I really have to snigger when I see these stereotpes. maybe you look particularly german. are you pale or do you have red hair?

Tell them if they laugh at you again, you have a friend named Norris that you would like them to met.

I remember smiling to myself recently when reading in an Orthodox Jewish newspaper (don't ask) a complaint about some article where the author praised the Germans for the efficiency of their World Cup side, bringing back the Holocaust and everything. How long can they hold onto it? A lot of Jews won't buy German products such as cars. Maybe I'm a traitor to my adopted race, but :roll: .

germany is alright, although some parts of the country are a real suckfest. and the language is wrong..really really wrong.

No, it's gotten silly at this point. It's like reparations in America; I never owned slaves, none of my family ever owned slaves, I don't owe African Americans anything. It's history that should be learned from and never forgotten, but it is in the past now. I say this as someone of Eastern European Jewish descent from one side of the family and German (among other things) from the other.

my mother (who's jewish) can't help looking at an old person in germany without going "and what were YOU doing 60 years ago?"

and look at all the neo-nazis. that sucks. anyway, it is in the past but... ah well...

altough kayla, indirectly you probably do owe afro-americans something... your job maybe, or something like that...

There's a difference between decrying an entire race, most of whom weren't alive for it, and looking askance at someone who might actually have been involved. We are responsible for our own individual actions. Neo-nazis are despicible, but that doesn't mean modern Germany is bad.

I can't tell if your last comment is serious or not. I don't owe anyone anything because of our respective races. Hell, half my family was living in the real ghetto back then, and the other half was divided among Yankee states (my mom's family has been here since the beginning; there's Sac and Fox and Blackfoot blood in my line, and we can trace the white part back to John Hancock). No slaveowners there. Even if there were, we don't hold the sins of the father against the son in this country.

There's neo-nazis everywhere, Fridge, not just in Germany. Any political gains they make will naturally be in the spotlights.

i don't know, there's probably something she uses today that was done by slaves... and I know there are neo-nazis everywhere, i'm just closer (geographically) to the german neo-nazis.

Well, I ate a sandwich last week that was made from flour tilled by slaves and PRESERVED FOR SEVERAL HUNDRED YEARS, does that count?

I don't know. Rammstein wouldn't sound the same in any other language. German gets some props for that.
