Post subject: New Book Covers: Thoughts?
PostPosted: Thu Aug 24, 2006 9:37 am
I'm getting my next book ready, I'm not set on the name yet, but I have ideas. As they start to flow I'm going to try to start designing book covers. I was wondering if I could post them as I go and get some thoughts?

Here is the first I've done:

Nothing here is final or anything, just basically visual thoughts at this point. Criticism is welcome, but I'd prefer the mature, constructive kind.

Thanks. :)

It's good. Perhaps a bit more detail to help shake that photoshop feel.

Detail in what? The actual photo of the road?

He might mean the curled edges.

Thats def good though. Maybe make the photo look older?

It's not a photo, but a book. =) Of course, this only took me 20 minutes or so to do. My first book was called The Road Between Here and There, so I'll likely not use this or change the name.

Thanks for the thoughts, though. :)

I like the photo, but I think the fond is a little bit too Gothic. Or does that relate to the nature of the poems?

My poetry is generally fairly dark in nature. If I write happy shit it's lame.

I find the whole lonesome road going off into the distance theme to be a bit overdone, personally. It's a nice picture, but I can't count the number of books I've seen with essentially the same cover.

Correct, which is another reason I'll likely not use it. It's almost a traditional image. What I do when I get a book ready is do a bunch of covers and just ask opinions. I generally know which I'm going to choose, or which I like best, but sometimes other people have opinions on the cover and it kind of makes me see it in a different light.

So I was making up a mock cover for my upcoming comic book (Far Side style). I just wanted something to catch the eye a bit more than simple words. So I look for a suitable comic, but I come across all my "hilarious" ideas that I scribble on sticky-notes, which is funny because I don't know what the hell the joke is supposed to be in most of them!

So I used one of them for the mock cover. If someone can tell me what the joke was supposed to be I'd like to know! Haha!

I'm not crazy about the font that "wut tha fook?" is in, and it looks a little...Photoshop-y, the way it's positioned on the cover. I like the rest of it, though. The way the title is done works well.

Yeah, WUT THA FOOK? was just meant for the photo. It won't be called that.

I've noticed that a lot of comic books like this are named nonsensical things that have no literal meaning. I have an old demo tape where my friend Jon is yelling ridiculous shit that makes no sense. I may use one of those because I started the band BORN LIKE THIS in high school, so it goes together. My favorite thing he shouts is: My bowling ball's got four holes!
