...Man, last nights AA meeting really got me thinking that all of us fucks who "admit" to alcoholism are just fucking attn whores, desperately in need of friends. We're self proclaimed sick people, looking for a way outta our troubles, and in need of a blame shift. You can become dependant on a lot of things, for example, RAPID spending on assloads of shit, or even healthy interests. I mean, I've had shit in my life that people encouraged at first, only to fucking take a step back, and say... "Uhhhh... Kinda obsessive."

Then again, the last 4-5 times I used, I woke up in some kind of trouble. I dunno.

Discuss.

Alcoholism is a weakness, not a disease. Suck it up and admit it.

Alcoholism doesn't exist. It was made up by people trying to sell an excuse to those looking for one.

Agreed with Ken. The personality is the only thing that is addictive. Learn to deal with it.

It's common to be self destructive. Think about it.

I think some people get dependant on things and find it harder to break dependancies than others, but I hardly think that addictions qualify as diseases.

There is absolutely such a thing as alcoholism, and it has both psychological and physiological components. It runs absolutely rampant in my family, to the extent that I made a decision a long time ago to never drink, ever. If I don't take that first drink, it will never be a problem. Addiction is a bitch.

I lump all self-destructive vices (alcoholism, drug addiction, overeating, gambling, uncontrollable public masturbation) as a total lack of self control. Those who suffer from these problems are always looking for A) excuses to justify thier behaviour, and B) directing liability towards everyone and everything except the liable. Calling alcoholism a disease is a fucking joke. It's a symptom of an individual's conscious physical actions.

You're are contradicting yourself. How can a conscious effort be a total lack of self control? Isn't alcoholism more a strong habit that is negatively perceived by society?

I don't believe in alcoholism. Most diagnoses are just unholy alliances of doctors and patients. The rapid increase of phatologic addictions of all kind is a just a reflection that more and more people can not (or are not willing) to keep up with the ever-growing social demands. Our society worships progress and sacrifices thousands and thousands of people (e.g. traffic deaths) to it day after day, but nobody has an idea where this progress should lead to. In the past they told us that it will make life easier, save time, outgun deseases, a.s.o. Today we see that this was a lie. Most "modern" people have less time than ever before and swarm millionfold in offices or factories to mark time for pointless activities that won't occur to anyone on his own free will. No wonder that basically everyone is deranged either way. To admit alcoholism is just a confession that you don't understand what the hell is the purpose of this all.

Yes, I agree with her, My Dad was a big time one, his Dad before him, and other members of the family. It runs in the blood. I drink but I keep it under control. If you have ever seen someone go through the DT's with alcoholism or Heroin for that matter you would understand that it is much more then a weakness and it is a very physical thing, just like nicotine.

Yes, it might be a weakness to get to the point where you are addicted to things but it is most definetly real and physical.

In this sort of things the psychological addiction is usually higher than the physical one. In other words you tend to associate alcohol, cigarettes or whatever with certain aspects of your life or certain activities, so when this situations occur you automatically have a drink, or light a cigarette etc. As far as alcoholism goes, if you admit to the problem, then you're half way there to solving it. It's not a disease, you are not sick, you don't need to turn to religion or whatever to overcome it (most aa groups use that sort of shit), it's just that you need to lay off booze because it's ruining your liver, your stomach and your central nervous system. Simple as that!!!

Now in general, of course you can drink yourself to a pulp on saturday nights, have a smoke now and then and so forth! All things in life are good as long as they are under control! I mean hey, how can you go to a live gig or for a night our with some friends without a damn beer?!?! It's heavy metal ffs (and that's how you assossiate drinking with other activities :D)!!!

Some people are just more susceptable to any kind of addiction than others, beyond their control. Just like some people are more violent than others, this does not mean that those people should not surpress their violent behavior, but they just will have a harder time doing so. It's that simple.

PS, not drinking is either for losers or ex-alcoholists.

AA never seems to be about the drinking, more about living your life right... and I can respect that. Howza about a change in one's life that:

A) Leads to better friends
B) Leads to better oppertunities
and thusly
C) Leads to safer drinking environments.

I can't go to AA if I don't believe in the boogeyman... LOL

I think if you spent more time drinking Beer like a fucking man, you wouldn't have time to post this pussy ass shit. Clean your vagina out, put on some fucking Tankard, and go get a 6 pack. Your penis will be restored to it's normal location.

Hahah, dude, I used to get my BAL so high, it'd engorge my penis twice as full, causing me break the record for longest dick twice (rather than once, like normal). I've been sober for almost a year, and my ass sweat would prolly still get you drunk. I think if you spent more time in jail, or accumilated as many OFFENSES, you might be less of a cock sucker, yourself.

Anyway, is "alcoholism" real or not? If yes, is it still possible to get away with using?

Answer the fucking question, cock grab.

Ahhh, I wish you would post more, you crazy son of a bitch!

No, I agree with Eyesore. It's an excuse for weak-minded people. Both of my parents are raging alcoholics, but I can drink without it controlling my life, or making me do idiotic things. I did get a DWI, and fully realize that was stupid. Do I blame alcohol for it? No I blame my own stupidity, nothing more. It was still my choice to make. It's not a disease, nor is it hereditary. That's all just nonsense to make people go to AA meetings and find Jebus. You control you, and your mind is yours, nothing elses. I think you are using "alcoholism" as an excuse for you apparent lack of self-control, and I think you have far deeper issues to work out than drinking. Something makes you do the things you do, alcohol or no alcohol. Maybe you should look into finding out just what that is. What is the source of your anger? If you are lashing out whilst drunk, you have something inside of you that you are not happy about, and the drinking just brings it to the surface.

And yes, I came to this conclusion through my own personal experiences with my demons, so I'm not just talking out of my ass.

As a wise t-shirt once said:

"I'm a drunk, alcoholics go to meetings."

Seriously though, alcoholism is merely an addiction to alcohol. No different than an addiction to drugs. I don't necessarily think its a "made up" concept, but it is sometimes used as a crutch by people who aren't alcoholics.
