If you've got a car available, Jaxx in Springfield, VA is the best place to go for shows.
http://www.jaxxroxx.com/ If you want to check out local record shops, Strangeland Records in Annandale, VA opened this past January and has a surprisingly amazing selection. It's also located in the building that used to house Annandale Small Arms Range, where my high school rifle team practiced and competed (I was extremely upset this past summer to discover that the range had been kicked out by the building's owner, the bastard). Other than that, DC isn't a very metal area. There's some cool stuff in Georgetown and DuPont Circle, but it's more for the hipster crowd. I'd go to the Hirshhorn Museum (my favorite art museum, you should go just to see the big man) and the Natural History Museum, and the Aeronautics and Space Museum is always cool.
EDIT: Hah, you beat me to the museum thing. Well, if you haven't seen the big man at the Hirshhorn, you should go again. He's amazing.
Thanks for the tips. As I posted above, I've lived in the states, so
I'm very familiar with Jaxx(no shows :(). I'll be going back to Georgetown
which had some cool shops when I lived there.
The Strangeland Records shop I haven't been too, I'll have to
check it out!
