Post subject: | Second Life |
Are people really making REAL money in Second Life? I have read rumors of people selling virtual stuff for idiots in Second Life and getting REAL US DOLLARS. I have read articles that say some people leave their real jobs to run virtual businesess in Second Life. Talk about crazy ... So what do you think? |

I have read that Sweden even opened an EMBASSY in Second Life, and all U2 members have their avatars, so people pay REAL money for their avatars to go to a virtual U2 concert, where they can meet Bono's avatar or somthing. |

Why not? I'm sure it happens. People have been selling virtual items even since Ultima Online came out ages ago. |

Back in the day when Ultima Online came out, and then Everquest, people were paying thousands of dollars for high-level accounts with epic weapons and shit. It still happens today. |

Didn't you guys hear about that guy in Korea or something who killed another guy for stealing one of his weapons in a game? I guess they were doing some kind of transaction thing, and the guy just ran off with his weapon...so first, the guy went to the police but they wouldn't do anything since it wasn't tangible theft. So, he killed the guy that stole his weapon ![]() ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() Some people take this so serious. The funniest thing I've ever seen is the video that shows a ton of people laying waste to everyone at an online funeral for a player who died in real life. It's fucking nerd ruthlessNESS and hilarity! So funny! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31MVOE2ak5w ![]() ![]() Awesome! The music is great. |

Read those 2 comic strips if you have time. It's from "The Noob" a very funny web comic that makes fun of many well known mmorpgs. The following 2 have a little to do with what you're all discussing here. http://www.thenoobcomic.com/daily/strip226.html http://www.thenoobcomic.com/daily/strip227.html |

Dudes, have you guys heard of DOTA or Maple Story? Jesus fuck, they're big here and every single teenager is hooked on those games. My housemates spent hundreds of bucks just to buy some sorta 'life card' or 'cash'. Thus, only bread and water for dinner. |

Yeah, I've tried Maple Story, it's a free MMORPG, although I guess you can buy some premium stuff that's only available to the people that pay, there's always a catch about these free MMORPGS. Some players gladly pay to get an upperhand over other players, and I don't really care, I mean it's their money, some people just don't have anything else to spend their money on. Personally, I'd never buy gold or items or whatever, I consider it cheating and it ruins the point of the game. |

Apparently you get sweatshop type places in Korea and stuff where kids just mine e-gold all day in WoW and then people pay real money to their cruel masters to get this e-gold. Better than getting their little fingers caught in sewing machines I guess. |

I don't know much about MMORPGs, but I think these are GAMES, and as such, they must have objectives. You can trade items and get real money along the way, but I imagine there's got to be an objective of some sort. Second Life on the other hand, from what I have understood, is quite different because it is not a game, it has no objective, it is a virtual world that tries to simulate real life. And since you can trade real dollars for SL dollars and vice-versa, you can open any kind of business in second life and make that as a way of life! True, I have read that several people left their real jobs and dedicate all their time to run their SL businesses. It's crazy, man. As someone stated here before, real life companies have virtual stores in SL. Some woman earned millions of REAL dollars buying a virtual island, building a virtual hotel in it, and later selling the damn thing. This thing is the perfect escape for people that are unhappy with their lifes. Virtual friends, virtual cars, virtual jobs, virtual money, virtual FAMILY (yes, you can have sex and babies in this shit) ... It's like a chance to start all over again. In a very crazy and sick way, but what is normal these days .... |

In a very crazy and sick way, but what is normal these days .... Nice way of putting it. I think MMORPGS and this Second Life thing are similar in the way that you can actually buy your way ahead of other people, and you don't even have to spend all that much money. It's easier to start a business in a game than to go out and actually do it in real life. If you're not doing that well in the game, then all you have to do is toss some cash at it and it's all fixed, which obviously isn't the case in real life. Like I said, I don't care how these people spend their money, but I still think they're losers. |
