State Sen. Stan Bingham, R-Denton, is known around Raleigh for his diesel Volkswagen fueled by used soybean oil. The car sports a "Goodbye, OPEC" sign.

"If somebody was going to go to this much trouble to drive around in a car that uses soybean oil, they ought to be exempt" from state taxes, he said.

Nice to see a Republican making sense for once.

The problem is Big Oil has plenty of money to hire lobbyists to run around Washington and make silly crap like this a reality so they can protect their interests. They don't want the little guy snubbing their noses at $3.00 a gallon and up gasoline, cuz that cuts into their bottom line. Companies like Exxon are turning record profits, and giving retiring CEO's multi-million dollar retirement packages. They aren't going to give that up quietly.

I didn't think this had so much to do with oil as it does taxes. People get into trouble all the time overstuff akin to this. Thats why people get in trouble for making moonshine. The only thing that makes this new is that its retarded.

Can you guys imagine the smell of the oil burning? It must have been disgusting, no wonder they fined him.
