Just a random idea.

Whenever you find a quote you like, post it here. Responding to particular quotes posted is encouraged.

I'll start.

"Men rarely (if ever) manage to dream up a god superior to themselves. Most gods have the manners and morals of a spoiled child." - Robert A. Heinlein

Ohh this is a good one for me.

In my english class, we have to choose a quote and paint it on the wall along with a painting of something to represent it.

"How on earth are you ever going to explain in terms of chemistry and physics so important a biological phenomenon as first love?"

Albert Einstein

I can only ever think of the Churchill one when pressed. He was at a party, having had a bit too much to drink, and some posh woman said something along the lines of, "you're drunk!"

"Yes, madam," he replied, "and you are ugly. The difference between us is that whilst in the morning I shall be sober, you shall still be ugly."

Bouncing off of Zad's...

"I may be fat, but you're ugly, and I can diet."

I saw that on a t-shirt when I was a kid.

Bored at work earlier, so I did some searching.

George Bernard Shaw wrote:
Patriotism is the conviction that your country is superior to all others because you were born in it.

Richard Dawkins wrote:
It is an article of passionate faith among "politically correct" biologists and anthropologists that brain size has no connection with intelligence; that intelligence has nothing to do with genes; and that genes are probably nasty fascist things anyway.

Ayn Rand wrote:
[The Native Americans] didn't have any rights to the land and there was no reason for anyone to grant them rights which they had not conceived and were not using.... What was it they were fighting for, if they opposed white men on this continent? For their wish to continue a primitive existence, their "right" to keep part of the earth untouched, unused and not even as property, just keep everybody out so that you will live practically like an animal, or maybe a few caves above it. Any white person who brought the element of civilization had the right to take over this continent.
(from an address to the West Point Military Academy, March 6, 1974)

Woody Allen wrote:
I don't want to achieve immortality through my work. I want to achieve it by not dying.

Isaac Asimov wrote:
Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome.

Eisenhower wrote:
In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

Niccolo Machiavelli wrote:
I desire to go to Hell and not to Heaven. In the former I shall enjoy the company of popes, kings and princes, while in the latter are only beggars, monks and apostles.

William Shakespeare wrote:
Out, out, brief candle!
Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more; it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.
(Macbeth Act 5, Scene 5)

Varg Vikernes wrote:
I am alive today because I reacted with anger instead of fear when I heard that the communist-fag would kill me! Had I reacted with fear I would in all honesty have been a coward, one who should die.
(from the Vargsmal)

Note I don't necessarily agree with all quoted here...

Re: Zad.

All of those are great, save one: Ayn Rand. How is that quotation insightful in any way? Its just "ra ra, might is right, white man and capitalism good, other ways of living bad, you have a right to be a selfish dick at the expense of everyone else, blah blah." Objectivism is such a repugnant philosophy, and I hesitate to call it that- it seems the equivalent of calling Scientology intelligent.

And that's my point. People treat Rand as some kind of visionary, for some reason, and examples like the above is proof of the twisted crap she spouts. I didn't mean it as a 'this person is awesome' quote; quite the opposite.

My bad- I failed to notice the "I don't necessarily agree" part.

Quote:
That's "MR. FRODO!!"

"SAM!"

"Get off the rooaaaaaaad"

"I will be dead before I see the ring in the hands of an elf!"

On the more serious side of things, here are some quotations that reflect my personal philosophy and which I try to live my life by:

Tyrion Lannister wrote:
We all need to be mocked every now and again, lest we take ourselves too seriously

Marcus Aurelius wrote:
Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.

Friedrich Nietzsche wrote:

I shall never tire of underlying a concise little fact which these superstitious people are loath to admit—namely, that a thought occurs when “it” wants, not when “I” want…

Socrates wrote:
I know nothing except the fact of my ignorance.

Too lazy to find more now. They'll come later.

John Donne wrote:
Go and catch a falling star,
Get with child a mandrake root,
Tell me where all past years are,
Or who cleft the Devil's foot;
Teach me to hear mermaids singing,
Or to keep off envy's stinging,
And find
What wind
Serves to advance an honest mind.

Never mind the rest of the poem is about the perfidy of women, I've always loved the first stanza. Donne is one of my favorite writers, though, especially "The Funeral" and "The Flea." They never fail to make me laugh.
