Post subject:  Why Do You Request Old Reviews To Be Done?

I'm just curious, I see a lot of requests here for classics reviews, or complaints about this getting reviewed and not that (see all the complaints about Octavarium not being reviewed quickly).

Most of the time you're asking for a review of an album that you have, an album you may have had for years or just picked up, but either way an album that you own and like, for what it's worth. So why, then, do you request a review for it?

See, I like reviews of albums that I don't have more than a review of an album I do own already. If I want to discuss the band, or that release, I can just start a thread in the appropriate folder. I like to read a review of a band or CD I've not heard before. It's great to discuss a review that is done on a CD you own already, but I don't understand what purpose requesting a review serves when you already have an opinion on the CD.

So, why do you guys do this? I mean, is it necessary to have a review of Epicus Doomicus Metallicus? It came out ages ago and we all know it's a fucking amazing album, a doom metal classic, possibly the best doom metal album ever! So why not start a thread about it instead? Is a review necessary?

Thoughts?

They need their opinions validated so they can feel special and smert. On a more serious side, maybe because they are interested in informing the uninformed? Ya know, helping the greater good...

I like to say "Yep, this is a classic allright, everybody should hear this". If some kid happens to come by who thinks Demon Burger is the bm godz , I want him to see what A Blaze In The Northern Sky is like, which is the way that I started listening to the music I'm in love with right now.

Plus they make good debates, dare I say the name BURZUM  .

I too want reviews of albums I've not heard yet, by band I know but preferably by band I've never heard of. When I request a review, which I've rarely done, then I don't think I'm capable of writing the damned thing myself and I want people to hear this album, because I hope they will enjoy it like I do. Classics is a different thing, some albums are just classics, that need to be reviewed before the heap of classics that aren't really classics. Burzum is an example for that, the same goes for Nargaroth, Tormentor, Venom, a few more and others that have already been reviewed as classics.

Some people, myself included, see the site gain credibility with classic reviews. And if I wanted to start a thread for every album I felt people should have, I would eventually clutter up the entire forum, not to mention all the MR visitors who don’t visit the forum, would miss out on the discussion.

True. And if reviews are going to be done at all, it makes more sense doing the good stuff, rather than some hardcore/nu-metal crap no-one cares about....Ken. :P

No one? How can you say that? You may not like it, but you aren't the only one that comes to this site. I visited this site for years before coming to this board. I'm not the only one who listens to things outside of metal.

I did say " :P ", so I wasn't entirely serious. I listen to lots of non-metal too, so we may be more alike than you think.......

Don't worry, I saw the smiley! I appreciate a good smiley now and again! With that said, you may not have been entirely serious, but others here are. :D

Yes, classics are one thing and normal reviews are another. and yes, at some point, if I have any say, we're getting a Epicus Doomicus Metallicus classic review and it's getting 99.9 / 100 and there'll be dancing in the streets. we'd be remiss to leave out the truly great releases, especially as omitting something so important is a lot like rewriting history to someone who's still learning about metal.

I used this place's archive of review to acquaint myself with metal, actually, before that I was mainly concerned with alt-rock and prog..

Obviously it's not perfect, otherwise it'd get 100/100.

when you find something that is perfect, let me know :D

and by that I don't mean that you should start waxing lyrical about snowflakes

Is that not an M-16, or as we refer to it, the C-7? (I used one in the army except it had a cheaper looking butt).

Hmm... did some research and it is a M4A1.

Thank you. I've always felt this way as well. I've never quite understood the need to see massive amount of reviews of CDs people have already made their opinion on, when they could just start a thread. I totally agree with you.

I suppose it depends on how you see this site. I use it to look up older albums as well as newer ones, and there are quite a few gaps. Requesting these albums to be reviewed makes MR a more complete site. Besides, it's interesting to look back now and then at the classics, many of which have never been matched by the newer releases.
