Shoenberg's early serialism (or actually dodecaphonic music) was taking the modal system to a constant change in key, resulting in the total absence of a key, and all 12 tones used.

Serialism is a completely different thing than modal music. For modal classical music, check out old church chorals.

When you take modulation to its extreme, you get dodecaphony, which is taking all keys at once, thus is devoid of any key, and has merely a system of following notes as a guideline. But I actually don't know anything about these things, just a few bits I've read here and there.

Also, I've got a couple questions...what's a mode

The modal stuff is when you change the key all the time, quite common in classical music. You change the key when you encounter a note that fits in the current key as well as the key you want to go to.

Thats completely wrong. Smiply put a mode is a scale that uses the same notes of any given Major scale but starting from a note that is not the root. It has nothing to do with changing keys, infact it has everything to do with staying in the same key. For example, if we were to take C major C D E F G A B and make a dorian scale from it (dorian would be the scale starting from sceond note of the major scale of your choice, in this case C major), it would be D E F G A B C, making a D dorian scale. It stays in exactly the same key (C in this case) but gives it the tonality of D. However you can only really spot a mode when its being used with chords, otherwise it would just sound like a C major scale. The chords that would work well with this D dorian scale would be D minor chords, yet importantly the key would still be C. Hope that explains it :)

Yes, I know that, I know a mode is a key. But the "modal jazz" genre means that changes within these modes are used. I could be wrong, but while mode means key, modal means changing it.

A mode is not a key, its a scale. But anyway, he asked what a mode was i explain it in a way he can hopfully understand coz it is quite complicated

Ahh, I misread, I think I get a bit of what you're saying, but obviously I need to read some more about it. Then dodecaphony is indeed nothing modal.

yeah, I think what you've done is misunderstood modes for keys rather then scales :) . That would explain some of your chain of thought. So yeah dodecaphony ain't got nothing to do with modes, its just fucking weird shit

...I'm totally lost.

I'll have to start playing an instrument or something, because I know absolutely nothing about music when it comes to the technicalities.

And, Misha, it came across to me that you were saying avant garde is a broader genre of music than metal rather than jazz is broader...and I don't listen to any jazz so I can't really agree or disagree with you on the subject.

I think it really is just because of the people who ask. Honestly, its always the same type of cunt who gets really really defenceive about it. In Brighton there sooo many of em. I go to a music college here and theres just tons of the fuckers, then theres all the music fans all the bands and people in and around the music industry here (it really i a very musical city) so every time i say i think Indie is shit (the only genre of music i truely think is shit) i just get these angry fuckers getting in my face about my opinions. Its just that one type of music fan that can't handle it, thats what i'm getting at.

Just a stab in the dark, but out of Interest, do you know or have come across a guy called Jonathan 'Pez' Perry and his Girlfriend, Chloe? He moved down there last year and is a drummer in a college metal band (can't recall their name, soz) last I heard?

If so, tell him his old mate, Hippy, says 'Hi'.
