I always liked Newsted. Of the four, he always seemed the most focused on writing good music ( My Friend of Misery is easily the most interesting track on the Black album for me). I also thought his moments on Some Kind of Monster were the most revealing and true, when he basically said Metallica was pathetic for having to use a shrink to get through their self imposed shit.
One of the cooler moments I have seen Newstead involved in was when he played in Govt Mule's The Deep End. Their bass player had died recently, and like 12 bass players came to fill in for him at this concert in New Orleans. Names like Wooten, Glover (I think), Claypool, really great show.
