I'm amazed at the level of bile being spouted at Megadeth's Super Collider. I've seen people compare it to Metallica's Lulu or even state it's on par with Risk (no way) or poorer than Risk.

Now first I agree it's a much weaker album than Endgame or United Abominations. It's probably on par with The World Needs A Hero which despite a few moments was a rather pedestrian affair.

But it's not exactly a new thing for Megadeth to write softer or more commercially orientated albums - Countdown To Extinction, Youthansia, Cryptic Writings, Risk, The World Needs A Hero, Thirteen.

Even big chunks of Rust In Peace are extremely commercial.

And even in terms of quality, it's nothing new for Megadeth to write a mediocre or poor quality albums - critics have slammed Youthanasia (though I love this one), Cryptic Writings, Risk, The World Needs A Hero, Thirteen and even the heavier The System Has Failed. None reach the lofty heights of the 1980s releases.

Is this a case of posers who only listen to "Tr00 Metal Approved" albums (i.e. KIMB through to RIP and Engame) simply disapproving of something that isn't Rust In Peace because that's what's expected.

By the way I'm a Megadeth fanboy (i.e. I even like albums of theirs that I generally would not like from another band ).

I love Megadeth. Super Collider sucks. That's about it.

Megadeth's Youthanasia is one of my fav albums. I never liked Risk that much. But I do like almost all their post RIP albums except for The World Needs A Hero, which I think is average. As for Super Collider, I listened to the title track and it was weak. It would've fitted anywhere in Risk. I haven't listened to the rest of the album, so I cannot comment. But, if the rest of it is like the title track, I'll pass or probably will give it a listen much later when I am in the mood. It definitely isn't on my priority list. And Megadeth suck when they play rock instead of metal.

Yep. Megadeth can make good "softer" albums (see: Youthanasia) but this isn't one of them.

For me it's a case of knowing what I like and what I don't like. I don't like Super Collider or Th1rt3eN. I'm not going to praise an album I don't like or hold back criticism because it might offend some people who actually like the album. At the same time if I hear something I like but wasn't expecting to like I heighten my praise for that album.

I'm late, again... I love Megadeth, a lot... But their last two albums have really been a huge disappointment. I felt like they were on the right track with United Abominations ( They had that right sound down, Dave actually seemed to give a shit about the songs... ) but now they're just on the whole " Oh, record label needs a new album " thing and putting out crap every two years.

Both Thirteen and Super Collider were pure junk... A huge disappointment. I was one of those guys always on the Megadeth defense force, but honestly those albums are more or less unlistenable and I'd really prefer if Dave and Co. took a break until they figured this shit out.

Thirteen is not great, and it's no Endgame, but I thought it was pretty good. Much better than Super Collider. Never understood the hate IT got.

Everyone keeps saying this album is Risk pt. 2 but I feel it is more in line with Youthanasia or Cryptic Writings.

Maybe, but not nearly as great hard rock jams as those two albums. I would accept that comparison with the caveat that Collider is a greatly inferior product then those two. I first read that as Countdown to Extinction and nearly flipped my shit.

That was my thought exactly as I should have been more specific.

This album wishes it were Risk and the whole album doesn't touch even one song from Youthanasia or Cryptic Writings

Nothing bizarre about it. The album is shite and totally beneath the talent of the players ala Metallica's Load. The Thin Lizzy cover is the best song on the record and it's just okay.

Hah. So says the "fanboy."
