btw, the quote might not be exact. I'm quoting from memory.

Does he not play guitar? That would explain why he was in Guitar magazine. 1 + 1 = 2. Shocking.

As for the comment he supposedly said; I don't believe you. That comment would be so stupid only Avenged Sevenfold could say it.

He plays the power chord, which every sad motherfucker who's been playing guitar for a few weeks can as well. As for the quote, he did say something to the effect, I'll go fish out the magazine later. My guitar teacher left me his guitar mag collection when he moved back to NY. I've got a guitar player from 1987 with Randy Rhoads on the cover

So? Not everyone is a guitar legend like Rhoads. You think a magazine in the US can survive by putting every obscure "guitar god" from Europe on the cover?

I'd also bet a million bucks that Billy Joe is better than you. :)

don't be so sure, i can play both minor and major pentatonic and diatonic scales. Which I bet Billie Joe can't. I also know what hammer ons and pull offs are and i can use them well. Again, billie joe probably can't. Same goes for tapping.

As a matter of fact, i'm not such a bad guitar player.

I was kidding. I will say, however, don't be so sure of how good someone is just because they may play something like punk. I have no idea how good Billie Joe really is, but I know a lot of punk/hardcore guitarists that can shred like Yngwie; they just choose not to.

I actually agree on Green Day being legends i think they suck but they could be consider legends of the punk/rock genre, the weird thing is that i used to like some punk/rock bands back in the 90s like Social Distortion, Circle Jerks or Bad Religion and even then i didnt liked Green Day.

yeah, we had this discussion before... Although if someone can play like that but choses not to, then we can despise him for not being tr00. OR for having crappy taste in music.

In all fairness a lot of good points have been made here, although a few opinions not really relevant to the original point. I've said in one of my own threads that I hate a particular band, metal or associated, because of one reason or another, so I know I can't talk too much about whether emo is shit or ace. I'm not an emo fan, I don't waste too much time thinking about it, but I can see both sides.

Emo has a bigger net at getting depressed/angst riddled teens to join the fan ranks, which is fine as it works for the kids who may have empathy with that music and may be some sort of therapy for them. However, I also think that any band (emo is the more likelier suspect) playing on mental issues like 'I cut myself, the world hates me, I want to die' just to make cash is quite repulsive.

It's wrong to paint all emo as bad as even Emo has it's gems. I admit to liking Rival Schools and early Weezer because they both have some uplifting tunes.

As for the Green Day/Punk thing. As far as Green Day are concerned, I couldn't give a flying fuck about them as I'm happy enough with my music collection to know that they mean nothing to me. Two of my best friends are Punks though, and they would happily buy a Green Day album or go to a gig of theirs as they would with Dropkick Murphy/Rancid/NOFX/Bad Religion/Capdown. Point being that if it works for them then who are we to judge?

Since emoism is a fairly recent phenomenon, I think that the day will come in an emo's life where he is looking into a mirror and plastering his greasy fringe across his forhead when he has the revelation, "Wow! I'm a fucking wanker!"

speaking of emos, I was at a local band festival last friday... so some emos decide to do their wierd moshing which involves punching random people. So this emo comes up to me and punches me in the stomach and expects me to like it. Then follows a dialogue something like this:
"Fuck man! What the hell was that?"
"AAAGHH!"
"Shut the fuck up you fucking emo asshole"
"fuck you fag!"
at that point I lost my temper and gave the sucker a punch that had him sprawling across the mosh pit. Then I jumped after him, grabbed him by the arm and started elbowing his back. Hard. The whimp broke free and ran away. He was pissing himself he was so scared. And i can understand him, I'm almost seven feet tall and look like a violent metalhead (I'm not really violent. I was just justified in punching this emo).

And that for me was the highlight of the whole concert. That and yelling at the punk bands who sucked ass.

Metal has it's share of depressed/angst riddled teens too, and they have many lyrics refering to death as well. So some people should stop bashing stuff like emo and realize that nothing is black and white and like you said so well, every genre has it's gems.

:dio:

If someone did that to me at a concert I would seriously, seriously fuck them up.

once again Metal has done the same with bands like slayer , venom being portrayed as satanists when in real life none of them believe in that. They simply do it to attract people's curiosity. just watch "Metal: A Headbangers Journey" it explains pretty much the concept of selling an image to sell albums. Metal is particularly good at that by the way.
Gorish hardcore covers works well in attracting people's attention as well..
And like mentioned before Metal lyrics are also playing on mental issues, doom metal is as depressive as fuck compared to emo, Death constantly talks about death, and killing and so on.

So once again blasting emo for the above quote by jurgen makes absolutely no sense and is basically hypocritical.

You aren't addressing the point that Jurgen made. I don't want to speak for him but I highly doubt that he respects the metal bands that do sell an image.

These are bands like Slayer, Dimmu Borgir, and Cradle of Filth--mainstream bands.

Where are the Leviathan, Evoken, Esoteric, Negura Bunget, Dolorian, Katharsis, DsO etc, etc, etc, albums being sold? What image is being marketed by these bands? Are you even aware of these bands? (Nothing wrong with not being aware)

And he said "playing just to make cash is repulsive", not "making cash is repulsive. I don't mean to come down on you hard, I appreciate your perspective on the board, but it is just foolhardy to claim that genres such as death metal or doom metal are primarily concerned with selling albums or marketing an image.

And I don't have a hatred of emo anyway.

Exactly. I have a ton of Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest etc. in my record collection. Those bands have made shitloads of money off their music. I don't have a problem with people making money off their music, as long as they remain true to their vision.

Not many emo bands sing about suicide (none that I've heard anyways...), those are generally pop-punk bands that are mistakenly called emo...

to hear actual emo:
