Very true...

I haven't heard a mainstream hip hop song I liked in ages and ages, but then further back in history there is a lot of stuff I admire, and I'm sure there's plenty more that I would enjoy in teh undergrounds. Fight the Power by Public Enemy is one of my favourite songs :D

See, that's the difference these days. Back in the 80's guys like Public Enemy genuinely had something worthwhile to say, and because of that were considered among the elite of the entire genre. Now none of the so-called elite of the genre have anything to say besides how much money they have and their hoes. Artists who actually have a something to say these days are laughed at by the typical mouth breathing Rap fans. It's a genre that was once just as "Anti-establishment" as Rock music, but now embodies everything it used to stand against.

I see music as a hell of a lot more than just mere entertainment. To me it is the highest form of art available to mankind. And Rap is far from anything resembling art. Art takes more than rhyming some random crap together like in the example on the last page.

rock music followed a pretty similar course.

Even mainstream Rock acts have at least something of value to say. Most mainstream Rap is nothing more than the Rappers personal ego trip put to plastic.

there are many metal bands with nothing to say. are lyrics such a vital part of music that they determine wether it's music or not?

there's good music and bad music, but saying that something is NOT music is just wrong, regarding rap.

also, the prodigy are awesome :dio:

Agreed, it's insulting to compare Public Enemy to 50 Cent or P Diddy.

That said, I think it would be narrow minded of us to assume that there is no hip-hop that can compare to the older bands. Given that hardly any of us actually have serious knowledge of the non-mainstream hip-hop scene, how could we pass authoritative judgement?

True, and I always leave a certain amount of possiblility open when speaking about rap just because my own knowledge doesn't go beyond the mainstream. I always repsected groups like Public Enemy, and if it's possible that groups like this still exist in the underground, then I have to assume there is better rap out there than 50 Cent and P Diddy. I still have fundamental problems with the style, but there are those I can respect for having something real to say even if the music is not my taste.

While I can respect certain rappers, I still don't like it enough to dig hard for it since I spend enough time digging for new metal

I do agree that rap has lost it's confrontational edge within the mainstream, but that's something that can't be sustained anyway. After a few years it will just become a parody of itself. Mainstream rap nowadays is full of talentless wasters, but mainstream music as a whole is full of talentless wasters. There is definitely still that style of confrontational/political rap around though, except it's in the underground where it belongs.

Here's a good example, although most will probably think it's lame: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1RwfjdM2Ro

Btw that Big L song is great.

I felt very tempted to vote "yes", since 95% of the rap I hear on radio or TV is absolute crap, but I haven't heard much non-mainstream rap, and if I heard nothing but mainstream metal I don't think I would be that fond of metal either.

With that said; the new Kottonmouth Kings video: GONE GIT HIGH :dio:

Alexander Hamilton once said, "The Masses are Asses." That pretty much sums it up.

There is no helping you because you don't consider it music. To me that's a pathetic cop-out. I've heard it said a million times about many different genres and it's always an excuse for being close-minded or ignorant. I've been listening to Bitches Brew only to have someone say it's not even close to music. It's happened with ambient music. It's happened with bands like Suffocation, or even Nevermore. When you slag off an entire genre of music when you hardly know anything about it you come off sounding like a 45 year old U2 fan.

Also the reason the lyrics probably don't make sense to you is because they were obviously taken out of context. I was posting it to show off the verbal skill, not to tell a story. And one more thing: OF COURSE metal has worried about being cool, moreso than rap a lot of the time. Metal fans can be the most elitist people around, taking extreme care in what they listen to and what people think about them for listening to it. Having said that, actually being 'cool' is clearly not a bad thing anyway, if you mean in terms of confidence and charisma. There's plenty of nerdy rap out there too though, if that makes you more comfortable.

If I hear a "song" and it sounds like nonsense to me, how else am i supposed to say that I dont consider it music? I am not some illiterate culturally void dullard. I have been exposed to all sorts of art and music. If rap, to me, sounds like a bunch of guys talking about how "baller" they are and how rich and "iced out" they are to "beats", how can you tell me I am wrong. That is what I am hearing. And, like I stated before I have listened to a lot of rap.

And as far as metal being cool, it isnt. It never was. The only metal bands that ever cared about being cool were hair bands. And they are not metal. They are rock. And rock, especially modern rock, is as pointless and vapid as rap. They equally suck.
