A lot of metalcore doesn't sound that hardcore inspired. It's hard to hear Black Flag or Minor Threat in Between the Buried and Me's music. Also lots of death metal is way further removed from thrash than most metalcore.

I totally agree on all counts.

I think a lot of the supposed "hardcore" influence in Metalcore comes from Groove Metal: Bands such Pantera and Machine Head had that whole tough guy image plus breakdowns and "emotional" singing that some later hardcore has.

The other thing is Pantera and Machine Head are more well known and accessible than most Hardcore bands such as Sick of It All.

So I suspect in a large number of cases. the "core" influence is actually a Groove Metal one.

The first two releases, Lunar Strain and Subterranean, have thrash and older death metal elements. The original version of Dead Eternity and both versions of Lunar Strain are as thrashy as you can get. Behind Space has blast beats. The best mix of extreme and melody are in the first two albums.

By the The Jester Race came along, the extreme metal component was toned down in favour of heavy metal + death vocals (ther than the song "Graveland").

By the time Clayman came out, it was Nu-metal shouting and bouncy riffs to form a proto-Metalcore album.

I'd say In Flames' two most influential albums were Jester Race and Clayman. Jester Race was the archetypal Melodic Death Metal album.

A lot of people jumped on the In Flames band wagon when Clayman came out (I suspect some of them formed Metalcore bands)

Most newer heavier/technical Metalcore bands sound like 90's hardcore/Metalcore as oppose to 80's hardcore.
80's hardcore is really simplistic and straightfoward. While in the 90's you have Refused, who is both heavy and progressive. Then of course there is Converge and Shai Hulud. The only 80's hardcore band that I think might have any influence later for metalcore would be Husker Du.

Took the words right out of my mouth, though I'm thinking more Merauder, Madball, and Sick of it all than Husker Du. Shai Hulud are fucking sick by the way
