Slipknot's Iowa.

I was 16 when I got this album and had a mainstream sensibility to go along with my classic metal palette. I think you either like Slipknot's riffs or you don't. I still think they write great riffs and some great melodies that fit along with them create a good counterpoint.

I'm not saying they are the Beatles, but I think that dynamic is there in that you have at least two people that write completely different things that fail when broken in two or left by itself. But together they are much stronger. The riffs have a sense of melody that goes very well with the vocals. The first album didn't quite have it together and vol. 3 completely failed to deliver that aspect at all.

I could name 100 great albums, but my MO is that I don't typically think much of the "classics" because I don't care about influence or anything other than the songwriting. I will hype something that sells 1000 copies as being better than Led Zeppelin IV until I'm blue in the face.

I think I very much have a producers and a songwriters sensibility in listening to music. IDK, if you want to know what is good in that sense, just ask.

My brother bought Iowa when it was released (we live in Nebraska) and just recently sold it for $800.

Wait what

Well, I paid 50 bucks for the Vinyl version (had to sell it back at a 45 dollar loss though) which was "cut out" by roadrunner since it was a promo. You know where the corner of the sleeve if chopped off so it will be unsellable/non-mint condition. And it was missing the "free poster" and was likely resealed by the owner of the record store. I know for a fact it was a new vinyl though.

But 800. I can only see that if it was Paul Grey's personal RIAA Gold Record for the album.

Bah, the progressive porncore is offset by groove grind guitar-drum interplay that is used by other groovegrinders ala Papa Roach or Alien Ant Arm.

Three Dollar Bill Y' All was the definitive progressive porncore album

Alien Ant Farm's only claim to fame is that they covered Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson.

My flatmate used to flog that song on repeat all the fucking time. Even his girlfriend avoided their room like the plague when he played it.

People actually listen to that cover? Why even bother? You can't get any better than the original.

I remember 10 years ago when I was called insane by people for telling this exactly. AAF's cover was very popular here, never understood why. Fucking people.

Hey hey, did we all forget that Alient Ant Farm crashed the BET Awards for their music video These Days? That was pretty funny.

Of course the MJ version is inifintely better.

But my flatmate was one of them fellows who didn't like music per se but listened to whatever was on the radio.

Him and his girnlfriend also had the loudest sex ever. You could hear her moaning a mile away.

Very offputting when you're trying to cook a pasta bake.

I'm surprised you haven't mentioned Master's Hammer, Sarcofago, Sabbat JPN, Kvist, Goatlord, or any other lesser known bm acts most recently receiving their accolades nowadays. Also wb btw

I forgot to add Necromantia's Crossing the Fiery Path and Scarlet Evil Witching Black. Not much can beat The Warlock. There ain't enough love for Necromantia in the world.

Damn, these two should have been on my list. I totally agree, I love Gates to Purgatory especially. Such a great album. Despite that I really love Under Jolly Roger and everything up to Black Hand Inn, I still find myself wishing they would have come out with a few more albums like Gates and Branded and Exiled.

Forgot about this album. Definitely a good one if I remember right, should give it a spin.

Pre-Black Shining Leather is pretty underrated, I agree. They were still playing some solid black metal back then that they aren't recognised for as much as when they fell into their own trademark sound with BSL. I still prefer BSL, Strange Old Brew and Defending the Throne, though. But then I think Carpathian Forest are underrated in general.
