Outside of metal, it seems we have scarily similar tastes.

Interesting that within metal, it's not so much.

Yeah that's strangely fascinating. I'm in love with that album actually.

With Zappa, there's a lot of well known classics, but one which is slightly less well known that I recommend is a box set called Shut Up and Play Your Guitar. It contains three full discs (including the amusingly titled Return of the Son of Shut Up and Play Your Guitar) which is entirely instrumental with Zappa's guitar playing constant lead.

Besides just being awesome, it proves something a lot of people don't give him credit for: that he was one of the most unique and talented rock guitarists of all time.

Frank Zappa and Pink Floyd both rock my socks off. I may not know as much as you two about either, but I certainly am a fan. Animals ftw!

Get really stoned and watch the Zappa concert movie Baby Snakes. Awesome live show, but also the most mind-blowingly psychedelic claymation weirdness you've ever seen. Amazing weed movie.

Rush - Rush

Was at HMV for 8 bucks so I picked it up. It's pretty pretty good and my second listen and I'm liking it even more.

Ever hear that Tenet album before? Monster riffs, and Souza sound like a tank on that album. Good stuff. Recommended to non-thrash fans as its pretty fuckin heavy and has some death metal moments.

Yeah, it's completely awesome. Actually you told me about it like 2 years ago on msn. I listened to some of it online and then just kind of put it my unwritten "buy-it-if-you-see-it" list. I saw it in a shop on the weekend and just picked it up.

So it was way too hot to go to downtown today. I had a good 15 minutes to walk until I would have gotten to record shop so I decided not to go. Instead I went to a cool close by mall and picked up these. I've been meaning to pick up these for a long time now:

I generally hate Cambridge Companions minus the Wittgenstein one.

8 out of 10 of the essays always just hit me as absurdly abstract and kinda circle jerk-y. I don't know, maybe I just have issues with boring philosophers resulting in boring collections of essays. I did just look up the Adorno set and that sounded kinda sexy, albeit I remember the Frankfurt School set was rather uninteresting.

You consider Kierkegaard, boring?! In any case, I have read a few chapters on the book and as always Cambridge is nothing short of excellence and well structured. Also, the Blackwell companions are excellent as well. But considering Kierkegaard, boring ?

I didn't call Kierkegaard boring. Over the last two years, I picked up a lot of the Cambridge Companions because they are always the first book to come up on secondary source searches. However, I've never been impressed by any of them. They come off as stuffy and esoteric, which is totally not my style of philosophy. I've never picked up the Kierkegaard one so maybe it is better. I know the Wittgenstein one is good and the Adorno one I googled and it seemed interesting. But the Heidegger, Kant, Descartes, Arendt, Freud, even the Marx one were just uninteresting and boring collections of essays. They provided interesting summaries at times, but never put forth a gripping claim which I want from a secondary source. Maybe it's because they are so general, whatever.
