I find it to be the worst thing in the entire world and I blame rap music form ruining America. It turned every teenager into an illiterate and it taught them to praise and revere a lowlife lifestyle.

So metal does not promote any indecency or negative influence? I think all genre's has it's pros and cons. And yeah everyone including me blames rap for promoting unhealthy lifestyles like pornography, gangsterism etc. But on the other hand, I cant defend metal at all. How many songs have been written about Satanism, drug abuse, alcoholism etc? The list never ends.

I'm not defending rap either, just making a statement on ypur comment. Anyway, I dislike rap a lot cos it just doesnt seem to click with me.

All hail drug abuse, booze and Satan! haha :D

You do realize this is ridiculous, right? And it could be turned into "I blame blacks for ruining America."

You can drag it down to whatever level you want to. What I am saying is rap music is very influential in America, and by that I mean the Hip-Hop lifestyle, but it is not influential in a good way. It praises cookie cutter conformity, a general disregard for education, violence and disrespect. The dress code is ridiculous and so is the "language." I, of course, only am making reference to those who make it a lifestyle. THis hurt American society because it lowered the level of intelligence in the common conversation. When hip hop terms are deemed acceptable we rape the English language. When kids show up to job interviews in baggy pants and tshirts down to their knees and say the term, "you know what I'm saying," and "you feel me?" after every sentence it is a sad state of affairs. I am not saying everybody that listens to rap is like this. I am obviously making a general statement, so nobody needs to defend themselves here. i am also aware that the long haired and dirty metal look can be used to counter this statement but in this day and age it just isn't as prevalent as it once was. And at least the metal fans I speak to, (this board), can speak English.

Rap is not music. Never has been, never will be. It's poetry to a beat, a beat that is stolen from actual viable sources of music more often than not. Sampling is the lamest shit ever. Sampling and intentionally not giving the proper credit is just plain wrong. Dr. Dre is the only actual musician in the entire lot, and he only produces cookie-cutter flavor of the month acts these days.

Bear in mind, I know full well the difference between Hip-Hop(The Roots) and Rap.

1 - How the fuck am I stereotypical if I am citing actual real life examples and I state that I am not lumping everybody that listens to rap into my example.
2 - Rappers do not have far better English skills than anybody.
3 - Maybe you will agrees with my #2 statement if I spell it "skillz."
4 - Fuck you. Where the fuck do you get off calling me a moron. You fucking child. Why dont you try and actually counter a statement instead of just attacking the person who states it. That is weak. Now quick, call me a fag.

I'm not going to argue with you, and I wasn't suggesting you were being racist with your comment; but I will suggest that, at a minimum, you educate yourself on the genre of hip hop before making such ignorant generalizations.

I have heard more than enough rap in my lifetime to know that I dont like it. I have had it forced down my throat since junior high. I have had friends that listened to nothing but rap for my whole life. I know, in a general sense the history of, the major players involved, and the styles and subgenres. I do not speak in ignorance. I may not be on top of everything in the rap/hip-hop world, but I most certainly know enough to make a decision. When i was younger, before I developed my current tastes, I even listened to rap music (12-14 years old).

Now, and I dont mean this in an argumentative way, how was my statement ignorant? Does my admittedly generalized view of certain people not ring true at all? Do you not know, or at least encounter people that fit this description? Am I really that off-base? And without throwing out the few "intelligent rapper names" that come out in every discussion of this sort (ie. Blackalicious, blackstar, the roots) can you honestly tell me that there isnt an overall and inherent shallowness and stupidity that the entire genre stinks of.

It only rings true because there are idiots everywhere, not because rap is an idiotic style of music.

You could say pretty much the exact same thing about mainstream metal...

I disagree with you completely; and I'm not a big fan of rap at all. You have a problem with black culture, or urban culture, I think. Rap music is not really the issue.

I think we can all agree America was fucked the moment the English handed control over to a bunch of former colonist, indian-slaughtering pseudo-fascists.

Yes, I feel sorry for the guy that hates blacks. Wooo, surprise.

I always considered rap and metal to be opposites as well. Rap is awful. I just dont see what people like about it. It actually pains me to listen to it. There are other genres of music that I simply do not like, but can appreciate why somebody else would. Rap is just alien to me. I find it to be the worst thing in the entire world and I blame rap music form ruining America. It turned every teenager into an illiterate and it taught them to praise and revere a lowlife lifestyle.

And yes, while there is some older rap that is fun and catchy and even funny, 98% of rap that I have heard is the aural equivalent of an abortion.

This man knows what he's talking about. Amen

Independent of the subject matter here, you can't have it both ways, Husker. You are the board's most irascible defender of "the purity of metal" and here you proclaim your love for a genre many metalheads consider the enemy of music. When people state their opinion you needlessly flame them without any argument of real substance. Aren't these narrow-minded anti-rap opinions basically the same views that you always champion when you are flaming Noodles, for example?

I completely agree with this too. I don't even think as rap as a genre of music in any shape or form. Obviously rappers have a fantastic grasp of poetry, and they're very good at making rhymes and getting their point across with words, but I don't see how it qualifies as music in any way when there don't seem to be any actual musicians in the average rap group.

Of course there are exceptions, I realize that, there's no reason to point it out.

Well, generally there's a singer, a DJ and a producer. They would probably qualify as the musicians, because they, like, create the music.

I think rap and metal have a lot in common. They both take very little talent to create. They are both very confrontationl, divisive styles of music in both subject matter and delivery, so people are rarely unsure of whether they like the style or not. They both focus on a strong, driving rhythm.

I would say something like easy listening jazz is more of a polar opposite to rap or metal is, than they are to each other.

oh and they both have a lot of talent and diversity that people only familiar with the mainstream may not realize
