Gave my gf a crash course in punk and metal. She loved palm muting, feedback, and pinch harmonics but thought most of it wasn't that aggressive :- (

Wasn't that aggressive? Oh, wait. You played her stuff you liked. Makes sense.

My ex loved Carrion Fairy and prior to that as heavy as she could tolerate was Dio. However, I don't know what you call Hayes vocals if not aggressive. The dude sounds like a lion roaring half the time.

She said he didn't sound loud. I saw her point but tried to point out that she was missing the point but I don't think she understood the appeal.

yikes

we've talked about music during workouts. from my experience it doesn't work. i start to dislike the music, because if you time a run by whatever it is you're listening to, you just want the music to end so you can stop running.

what i have found effective is 'playing' it in your mind as you run. it has to be something you know well enough to reproduce in your head. i did it with a bunch of Kamelot songs a couple of times and i found that having to focus on playing the song in your head can make you forget about what you're doing physically. plus, Kamelot is the shiznit :dio:

i was listening to Fleshgod Apocalypse this weekend and while i mmostly enjoyed it i was annoyed at how often they ruined a good riff with blasting. the worst offender was their cover of Blinded by Fear. in the verses it's ok, but in the chorus or when the riff played by itself, the guy was completely ruining the flow of one of the greatest riffs in metal by just blasting all the way through it. i really, really hate that.

it buries the riff, it breaks up its flow, it makes it seem slower, why the fuck do so many acts just keep blasting away through entire songs? it sounds like shit.

It's trendy. Seems like lazy drum writing to me.

definitely. somehow a demonstration of speed and stamina qualifies the drummer as technical and the music as "relentless and pummeling" instead of boring and boring, respectively.

The shit is still based on timing, they're not just hitting them as hard as they can without matching it up to a beat. That's where the technicality comes in. You can still find death metal bands with one bass drum or who don't use blast beats incessantly, but true it has become the norm.

true, they are keeping a pace, it's not random, but it is poorly thought-out. there are bands that don't do this, though... the good ones :) i don't mean to say all i want is complex drumming and shit, i just want drumming that lets the riff flow in the best possible way.

on Demon of the Fall acoustic, is it one in a record store or book store or something (can't open it here)? my friend put that on facebook i wanna see it when i get back home.
