Seems good advice! Know there are a quite a few bands that I've never listened to properly (eg Summoning, as reminded by the classic this week) that I really should listen to properly as opposed to hearing the entire new deluge of stuff that gets pushed out every week...

Absolutely good advice. Summoning is a good example since I just heard the new one and the old one was reviewed this week too. Maybe I'll just listen to their back catalog this week.

lol. It is truly the best feeling when you learn to cut your losses and know your own limits while being able to judge what is necessary to consume and what isn't. What this guy is saying is basically what I've attempted to do over the last two years.

Doing some wandering around the internet, I discovered Mike Scheidt from YOB has an acoustic album and a black metal band ft. John Cobbett from Hammers of Misfortune. Cool.

From the Scalzi article:
Quote:
it’s not about catchy songs, memorable riffs, vocal lines, inflections, etc. It’s either about something much more general, much more atmospheric (which is what they say about a lot of “ambient Black Metal”)—-and therefore any effort to break it down into its constituent elements misses the point, and/or it is enjoyed according to a completely different set of standards than Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, etc. In fact I would not be surprised if someone who listened to a lot of industrial/noise or “new age music” would appreciate Death/Black Metal for reasons totally foreign to me as a metal fan.

He answers his own question on why he doesn't like it pretty well here, and his emphasis on traditional standards inherited from rock music on what makes 'good' music is part of the reason why I admire, rather than like, Slough Feg.

You could probably put all of our tastes as listeners on a spectrum where at one end you have some of the most standard pop/rock song structure stuff ever written (think Help! era Beatles) and on the other end of the continuum there is Sunn O))). 95% of the music Scalzi enjoys appears to have very standard elements that make up a classic rock songs, whereas I might only claim 20% of the music I like has those standard elements and structures. It is a pretty large gap, and partially explains why posters like Walnut and I rarely agree, and why the Volbeat thread was our forum's last big review argument.

He does a good job of explaining continuity to atmospheric black metal/free jazz/modern classical that makes them maybe more similar to each other than to the metal/jazz/classical they spawned from. The cool local record store in Victoria was all about Cecil Taylor, Arvo Part, and Ulver but couldn't be fucked with Sonny Rollins, Mahler, or Motorhead, and it seems like that's the divide he's getting at.

I'm probably on the structure/melody/etc side. Although part of me thinks I'm picky these days and want all of it. Like take this song by The Fugitives. They could fiddle with that piano part for 10 minutes and it'd be gorgeous, but instead they write a concise, catchy, beautiful pop song with lovely vocal harmonies and interesting lyrics on top of it. But overall I like melodies. Atonal and/or atmospheric stuff only makes sense live for me.

Slayer's War Ensemble played on Ukulele, it's pretty epic!

I was going to make a Trouble vs. Candlemass thread, but then I realized Candlemass would probably win every time lol.

Emperor playing live at Hellfest last week. Middle-class dad Ihsahn with glasses struggles a bit on vocals, sadly.

An hour long chat with Aaron Stainthrope of MDB. He's an enjoyable listen, also claims the upcoming album is 80% death metal vocals.
