Tom Araya sounds ready to retire, yesterday. Wouldn't be surprised if Repentless was the last Slayer album (surely King couldn't keep it going without him?)

That article was depressing. No Araya means no Slayer, I think more so than no Kerry.

I'm okay with the band hanging it up. Those guys deserve to be home and enjoy time with their families. Slayer have made their mark in metal and left a lasting legacy that few bands can match. Will miss them for sure, Araya especially, but they've earned their place in the sun. Hail Slayer :dio:

King is such a dumb ass sometimes. Verbally sabotage the tour that you are headlining just so you can get a dig on some label guy who called you old and fat. One of the MI posters said it perfectly. He thinks he's being blunt when he's really just to lazy to be tactful. Easy to understand why Araya keeps it strictly business with him.

I almost question whether they could financially just hang it up. I feel Araya only tours to pay his bills at this point.

Invisible Oranges has really gone downhill of late:

http://www.invisibleoranges.com/2015/08 ... g-dilemma/

Completely ignores how the underground has shifted towards sites like Bandcamp that place the band in power, not the label. The wider availability of music is *a good thing* for both consumers and bands, and whining about technology and greed is missing the point entirely. Piracy has been minimalised, for one. Grr.

Seems like garbage. Don't recognize the author's name, but apparently is other article was rubbish too.

All I read from that other was whine, whine, whine. In typically Luddite fashion, I never got into streaming services, I still download, listen to the full product, and if I find myself repeatedly listening to it, I will buy it, whether I am basically broke or not. So am I more honorable now, or less honorable than ever? Where is Ken to tell me this?!

my complaints about streaming are based around vague feelings but they seem like similar vague feelings to the article. like, anything ad-funded is terrible because advertising is terrible. netflix-style streaming makes me uncomfortable because idk where my 8$ is going, and if something isn't on netflix then i'm going to pirate it, so a movie can either a) be on netflix or b) not get my money, which seems like a pretty big bargaining chip for netflix. the threat of piracy is kinda looming over everything in this debate. bands putting albums on bandcamp or youtube seems, to me, like an acceptance of piracy's inevitability ("if you're going to get our album for free, at least get it for free on our turf") rather than a reduction of piracy. also to a lot of people the idea of paying for music has gone out the window. like my mom owned hundreds of records and hundreds of CDs but i don't think she's bought any music in almost ten years. none of the other money sources for bands seem that great to me (ads, touring, by-the-month streaming). but i haven't really talked to anyone about this. maybe movie studios love the netflix economy? i like streaming because it means i have access to all the music, but that's the same reason i like what.cd

for me i like digital downloads because it's "you made an album i like - here's 10$". and it seems like the format where the biggest portion of the 10$ will go to the band/label who brought the music to me. i'm really bad at keeping track of what i've bought and what i've pirated though. sometimes i'm tempted to buy records because listening to them is a process (taking it out, laying it down, dropping the needle, flipping every 20 minutes, etc) and there's the mystique that it might sound better/different/"analog warmth", but also i'm not sure if i want my money going towards carving grooves into lumps of plastic and printing covers/sleeves etc

i dont agree that it's the fans who brought this about though. that sounds too intentional. i think it's just the industry being shaped by technological innovation. i can't imagine people trying hard to buy music will be much more than a drop in the ocean when it comes to shifting the direction of the industry as a whole. i'm pretty interested in how things will look in the future because i have mixed feelings about all of it.

Yeah, ultimately.

Pretty good nu metal retrospective. This seems a bit harsh but amused me:

To tie Slipknot’s success with any music trend is like trying to map Insane Clown Posse’s success by the state of hip-hop.

Carpathian Forest's cover of A Forest is one of the great metal cover versions, especially for black metal.

Just found out Nile & Suffocation are playing my town tonight but I'm too tired from work to even consider it. Fuck adulthood.

Big release/review weekend for me. Maiden, Nile, Slayer... A new Fuck the Facts somewhere along the line, plus upcoming Horna, Skepticism, Mgla... The realisation I can't cover everything any more is still a sad one.
