- You are a self-hating metalhead. You cant admit to yourself that you actually like metal. Everything you listen to seems to have to have some sort of slant to it, be it artsy, or underground, or just flat out contrary to whoever else you are dealing with. You dont like anything that is generally accepted and since you are in the metal world when you are on this board, and rap is not generally accepted in the metal world...you like rap.

Actually I don't like rap, that's why besides Deltron 3030 I couldn't come up with any actual examples of musically great rappers or whatever. I'm just using the fairly logical assumption that the genre has just a thriving and varied underground as metal or post-hardcore (the two genres I know best) does, probably even bigger because rap is more popular.

and yeah, I'm a crappy metalhead

That was one of my favourites back when I was into rap around two years ago.

I defy anyone to not be impressed by this:

'Canibus is the ultimate executioner's dream
Swingin the guillotine, cause whenever the head is severed
from the human body with a sharp enough weapon
the brain remains conscious for ten seconds
Long enough for me to give you one last message
And when you get to Hell you can tell Lucifer I said it'

'And if you can hear, smell, see, touch, and taste
then you don't need six senses to feel me punch you in the face
From Brixton, to Clapham Common, my lyrics invade Europe
like Joseph Stalin, and murder niggaz for rhymin
Spittin fire, with gasoline for saliva
As drunk as Lady Diana's driver wit reporters behind her
Alcohol in the hands of a minor
I got you panickin like bombs, with 30 second timers
Clear the buildin, evacuate women and children
Fuck what you feelin nigga, I came here to kill em
Straight shittin, from New York to Great Britain
And when we do shows we make the Queen pay admission, what!'

feelin' it?

It's like reading some nonsensical spy story written by an eight year old. You know they mean well, but just don't have the grammatical skills to string two ideas coherently together.

Eternal Idol: it's easy to make a beat with your computer, but to make it a good beat and a good song it takes more than just that.

so electronic music like, say, The Prodigy, is made by untalented non-musicians?

Yes, because I despise The Prodigy with every fiber of my being. And even though I do like some Electronica, like Aphex Twin, I still can't decide if it's actually music. Richard D James is actually doing mathmatical equations as opposed to writing "notes" per se, so I'm really not sure what to call it. And I hear a lot of Rap music these days that doesn't even have what would qualify as a beat. I've heard a few that just have some random noise playing behind them.

i don't understand why you guys are still arguing about whether or not the lyrics are 'good' or the beats are actual 'music'. It sounds good in the end, and that's all that matters.

What if it doesnt sound good in the end? More people hate it here than like it.
Also, the beats and the lyrics are all that there is. If a person doesnt qualify "beats" as music and thinks the lyrics suck, than what is there to like?

Also, you referred earlier to your eyes being "opened." Care to say how.

Well if you think the lyrics suck please find better from any genre. Or do better. And if you think a beat with melody over the top doesn't qualify as music then there's no helping you. The only point anyone has is that there is no singing involved, and that kind of falls flat on a metal board anyway, where singing and lyrics are pretty much an afterthought. It's fair enough if you don't like it, but the most wise lesson my music teacher taught me was that there is good and bad of every genre of music. Whether anyone likes it or not metal and rap are lumped together by mainstream society anyway, in that they are both misunderstood, fresh (a lot of the time) and rebellious. It just strikes me as weird that metal fans and rap fans both seem to despise the other genre and end up sounding like the people that were attacking their music in the first place, if that makes sense.

The lyrics suck because they suck. I cant even explain it. They arent about anything. What the fuck is he saying. Who the hell is getting executed and why is marijuana involved. It doesnt tell a story. They are random phrases thrown together to sound cool. Rap cares about being cool. Metal doesnt and never did. And lyrics in metal can suck also, but in metal the voice is more of an instrument than a lyric delivering device, so therefore, they can be excused. In rap, the lyrics are the most important aspect, especially since there are generally no instruments, and even when there is, from what I have heard, the instruments dont carry the song, they are there for background.

Why is there no helping me? Because you like something I dont. Because your more"open" than me? Being "open minded" is a ridiculous notion when talking about things you like. I have heard plenty of rap in many different situations. I still dont like it. Does that make me close minded or does it just mean I dont see the musical merit in it?

I can also give a shit that there is no singing involved. There is no singing in instrumental metal, or classical music, or a lot of jazz, and I respect all of those genres. I have no respect for rap "music" though.

There is no helping you because you don't consider it music. To me that's a pathetic cop-out. I've heard it said a million times about many different genres and it's always an excuse for being close-minded or ignorant. I've been listening to Bitches Brew only to have someone say it's not even close to music. It's happened with ambient music. It's happened with bands like Suffocation, or even Nevermore. When you slag off an entire genre of music when you hardly know anything about it you come off sounding like a 45 year old U2 fan.

Also the reason the lyrics probably don't make sense to you is because they were obviously taken out of context. I was posting it to show off the verbal skill, not to tell a story. And one more thing: OF COURSE metal has worried about being cool, moreso than rap a lot of the time. Metal fans can be the most elitist people around, taking extreme care in what they listen to and what people think about them for listening to it. Having said that, actually being 'cool' is clearly not a bad thing anyway, if you mean in terms of confidence and charisma. There's plenty of nerdy rap out there too though, if that makes you more comfortable.

And rap fans in general probably outnumber metal fans 10 to 1. It means nothing.

With that said; the new Kottonmouth Kings video: GONE GIT HIGH :dio:

+1. Metal just has a different set of rules for what's cool and whats not. Also you can't really judge rap lyrics when they're just written down because how they're delivered is something that affects the quality of the music as well.

Also I don't get the is music vs isn't. If it's sound that is meant to be listened to for entertainment then it's music. It might not be good music, but it's still music.

that's pretty much what being, like, close minded is.
