Call me a Philistine or whatever, but that "song" (4'33") is stupid. As much as I dig artistic stuff, this just seems like total pompous bullshit. It's the "musical" equivalent of someone painting a dot on a canvas and having it be called a "masterpeice" and an "artistic triumph."
But, y'know that's just me.
You don't like Mondriaan? The reason why this is such a masterpiece is because it is the first time in the history of music that the composer would not describe a performance note by note, but would only cover the idea of a composition. It's the first time the composer stood only at the beginning of a piece, and didn't walk hand in hand with it all the way through. This was described by Cage as such, and many composers have worked with this new idea. Neo-Dadaistic interests grew from this, post-Modern music. Chance based music, process music, minimalism, and all the way to modern composers such as John Zorn sprang from this idea. Think of elements like prescribing the number of notes a musician should play in stead of prescribing which. I feel that music always is a bit later with movements like this than art, I see the late 50s as the rise of Expressionism.
