Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah

Sadly I've come to dislike that song just because everyone gets teary eyed when it comes on and bangs on about how much they "love that song". Same reason I began to dislike Eva Cassidy's version of "Fields Of Gold"

Here's one for you:
Mack The Knife!

You have a point about Hallelujah. Every time I turn the TV on they are playing that song on some dumb advert for some stupid new American teenage drama.

Mack the Knife is a great contribution though.

There is only one song that I know nobody hates, or could possibly hate. It's called 4'33" and it's a composition by the Neo-Dadaistic composer John Cage. This is fact. For any other songs mentioned in this thread there is always someone to be found that doesn't like it.

Wikipedia on the song...

Game Set and match to Misha. While not many people actively like it, I doubt many people dislike it.

I actively dislike the amount of attention it gets. Does that count?

Also I imagine that if you payed to see it performed you'd hate it :P

Listen to the song and your situation remains the same, but you can still say you heard Cage.

@ Frigid:
Ofcourse, and a lot more. I really like Modernism and post-Modernism. This is actually the one composition that introduced post-Modernism, don't you think?

Sorry Misha, I'm lost here. I have no knowledge about this genre, except some names and the fact that Cage wrote a piece that's only silence. My dad's the big fan, he works in the Conservatory. A friend of his, Nadir Vassena, is also a composer, you might like his work.

Yeah, you told me before. I checked out his website and the mp3s sounded really good. I wasn't able to find much more about him though. Do you like Iannis Xenakis?

Call me a Philistine or whatever, but that "song" (4'33") is stupid. As much as I dig artistic stuff, this just seems like total pompous bullshit. It's the "musical" equivalent of someone painting a dot on a canvas and having it be called a "masterpeice" and an "artistic triumph."

But, y'know that's just me.

I agree. You can bet Cage was chuckling when he thought that one up.

You don't like Mondriaan? The reason why this is such a masterpiece is because it is the first time in the history of music that the composer would not describe a performance note by note, but would only cover the idea of a composition. It's the first time the composer stood only at the beginning of a piece, and didn't walk hand in hand with it all the way through. This was described by Cage as such, and many composers have worked with this new idea. Neo-Dadaistic interests grew from this, post-Modern music. Chance based music, process music, minimalism, and all the way to modern composers such as John Zorn sprang from this idea. Think of elements like prescribing the number of notes a musician should play in stead of prescribing which. I feel that music always is a bit later with movements like this than art, I see the late 50s as the rise of Expressionism.

I keep telling you, my knowledge is limited to the occasional name I hear from my father (who is right now preparing a seminar on Schönberg and politics- unless he gave it already) and the fact that Vassena is a friend of ours. Personally i haven't gotten into it, and usually I don't really like the occasional contemporary concert I can go to.
As for Vassena, I can probably upload a cd.
