Watain won't be playing with Behemoth tonight due to visa issues. Fucking bureaucracy. It was bad enough that I freaked out when they changed venues but now this. Ugh. Devil's Blood and In Solitude better be fucking great.
You'll have a hell of a time with The Devil's Blood, a ritualistic experience...
It sucks big time that you won't be able to see the mighty Watain.
The Devil's Blood sucked, but I'll get to that.
In Solitude was rather shitty. The vocalist was a hot damn mess. You couldn't hear him and by the end of the show he had just fallen into me off the stage and I had to hold the fucker up while he tried singing his last chorus. Should have let him fall. The riffs were just basic Angel Witch it seemed like. The drummer was the one stand-out aspect of their set.
The Devil's Blood came out super dramatically and then just played the most boring set I have ever sat through. Decent riffs, but no showmanship. Boring live performance. Being covered in pseduo-blood doesn't mean you can stand their like an oaf and cycle through your riffs. If they didn't seem so damn pretentious maybe I would have been able to tolerate it. Oh, and vocalist lady? Not bombastic at all and her vox totally didn't match the music. I'd take Jex Thoth any day over that shit.
Behemoth. Nergal's first show in the states since leukemia and it was pretty awesome. He's thinned out, looked like he has aged a bit, but he's in super awesome shape. He visibly appeared tired at times and he took some breaks, just like fifteen seconds between songs but he was on his game. The blonde rhythm guitarist took over for some of the vocals but it worked out completely fine. Overall, they seemed to be playing slower. What I love about Behemoth live sets is how they used to speed each track up, but understandably Nergal has kinda settled into his Alas, Lord Is Upon Me and Lucifer pace, and the songs totally still work. He is just such a badass though. Doing solos leaning into the crowd, working the folks and getting them pumped. He just exudes confidence.
Honestly, if anyone is planning on attending future shows on this tour, coming an hour and a half after the show starts won't hurt you. Watain will surely bring a strong performance where the others lacked.
