Subjectivity in art is yet another problem tied to Minimalism, because
it allows the parameters of art to be stretched so threadbare that art
no longer has any meaning at all. The Minimalist enthusiast can
always use the all-encompassing defense of "artistic subjectivity"
when he or she is unable to think of a reason why a piece of art has
any artistic merit. The truly great artist, however, knows his or her
art is great because of the amount of time and thought that went into
the creation of the artwork. It doesn't matter if the average viewer
thinks the great artist sucks; it may be that the average viewer
simply cannot understand why great art is great, and so will dismiss
great art as bad. Great artists know that the most formally complex
art is the greatest art. It is the inferior artist who espouses the
"less is more" aesthetic.
