i'm going to gigantour in may and it will be my first true metal concert. Any tips for not getting to hurt in the pit. All of the concerts i go to that are local have kids windmilling and shit like that.

The only tips I can offer is avoid the morons who have never pitted before and believe they have to try and knock you out by throwing punches and kicks. Fucking ridiculous.

Should be a great show. I'm going myself in April... In Flames and Megadeth are two of my favorite bands and having Bodom along for the ride isn't bad either. Definitely a worthwhile show to check out, In Flames will be flawless as always. Haven't seen Megadeth or Bodom live yet outside of on DVD's/Net so can't really report on what the experience is like at the actual show.

Try to keep a layer of at least one person between you and the pit. I call it a buffer. That way you have a cushion from getting some douche nozzle mosher thrown into you when you're trying to enjoy the show. I think you'll be surprised at how many people don't mosh.

Just stay away as far as possible. Having a one man buffer isn't all that safe. You could get pushed in from the back anytime.

I'm not sure bout the pits over there, but I kinda hate the ones over here. I love moshing, but it gets really annoying when the hardcore pricks rush in. They'll be doing their weird arm n leg flings and it just pisses the metal moshers. In most gigs over here in Malaysia, the hardcore kids get beaten up and I love it when that happens. Having my foot in a guys mouth last month was fun. The pain that dick went through.....

The only thing i really hate about concerts are people moshing, i really don't see what's so fucking great about it. I usually stay in the back, drinking and kicking everyone that hits me, in the ass or punch them in the back. HARHAR

Must be different over there. I saw Slayer and Mastodon a few years ago, and the mosh dorks were given a big open space to practice their "craft". The people in the "buffer" layer rarely got touched, but if they got close, they would just give the moshers a hockey check before they ever got near the rest of us. Almost like a security staff.

I'm with Dago, I go to a show to see the band. Moshing makes that nearly impossible, and seems really stupid to boot.

Well over here, even how small the venue is, we don't have 1 BIG pit. There would be a few circles and the buffer boys would just get sucked into 1 pit while trying to avoid the other. We had 3 pits during Kreator in 2005 and roughly about 5 during Slayer in Singapore. Our annual Rock the World (2006 edition) had up to 8-10 pits, considering the turnout was around 25 000 people.

I actually try to stay away from moshing, cos I find it pretty lame. But somehow or rather my friend will talk me into moshing, especially when the hardcore and emo fucks are around. Whenever I'm going for a gig, I pump iron 2 weeks before the gig, just in case :P

All the local shows near me have a bunch of hardcore and emo bands and fans. Every once in a while we get a really good metal band. I hate how the hardcore kids "dance". its really dumb and i got kicked in the head one time. it pissed me off.

How many people usually show up to these concerts?

I went to Gigantour in 2005. May be I'll go again this year.

As for the mosh pits, just sit a little further back if you want to avoid them altogether. Or, if you HAVE to go in, pay close attention to them first and find a spot where you won't have to deal with bratty kids/teenagers hell bent on ruining your Megadeth T-Shirt.

I'm not a big concert goer but I tend to stick to the side of the crowd or the side of the mosh It worked well at Ozzfest until LoG incited 50% of the crowd to mosh.

I got pushed into the pit during Megalodon in the Mastodon concert, and it was actually kinda fun. I was pleasantly surprised at the lack of hardcore kiddies acting like dicks.

However, I doubt I'm leaving the Converge concert without getting hurt. :P

Just have fun. Throw up horns, sing along, headbang, all that jazz.

That's what pisses me off the most. Their 'dance' consists of karate chops fused with the macarena. It's the weirdest shit and they seem to think it's cool doing it. The won't realise how harmful those chops can be until they're hit themselves.

Here in Malaysia it's kinda similar to the scene at yours. Most of the gigs are a mix of hardcore, emo and metal bands.

Best gig ever was Cannibal Corpse.

"HAAAMMEEEER SMAAAASHEEED FAAAAAAAACCEE!"

Then everybody moshes. EVERYBODY. No gay shit, just good old school slam dancing which is awesome.
