Can't please everyone I guess. I consider doom a strong point but will readily admit my knowledge of the subgenre only extends so far. I suppose that's the problem with having very broad musical taste and only a finite amount of money.

Unholy is a great suggestion just one I would reserve for a while, like trapt suggested with reserving the similarly excellent Dolorian. I think I'd suggest going from Ahab to something like Mournful Congregation or Monolithe before tackling Thergothon too. Good suggestions, just a bit raw for a newcomer.

That Anathema album is a mixed bag for me, Shroud of Frost and A Dying Wish are fantastic but then there are songs on it like Nocturnal Emissions, lol.

I personally don't care for traditional doom bands like Trouble, Solitude Aeternus, or Messiah era Candlemass, just as many of those fans could care less about MDB and (early) Katatonia. No matter though, we can't all always agree.

I didn't mean to criticize your suggestions. I just listen to a very particular aesthetic when it comes to metal and particularly doom metal. Like I don't imagine most folks on here digging Thou and Noothgrush.

I'm willing to bet I'd prefer Thou to Solitude Aeturnus. So I'm listening to Heathen now. We'll see.

Edit-Yep, 'Free Will' is something I prefer to every Solitude Aeturnus track I've ever heard. Not bad at all.

Note-I am picking on Solitude Aeturnus out of respect. Nothing but respect for that band, as like is not part of the equation. 40 Watt Sun would be an example of a band not meeting the respect threshold for these types of comparisons.

So then North out of curiosity what is it you're looking for in your doom? Perhaps a question I should have asked earlier which may help us all provide more specific recommendations.

Thrashtildeath asked about doom actually. Don't mind me, I'm just listening to suggested stuff randomly on my own time.

Good suggestions, gents. Appreciate the broad swath of doom styles as I'm not too familiar with anything beyond classic bands like Trouble and Candlemass. Currently rediscovering the great Type O Negative after a long period of indifference to their stuff. Peter Steele's ironic sense of humor gives the band's material a real charm that is hard to resist.

Good idea, that band is always a fun listen every now and then.

Judas Priest - Angel Of Retribution (Repurchase. Had it on tape, purchased the CD)
Judas Priest - Redeemer Of Souls
Megadeth - Thirt3en

Agree about TON. Fun band. If I ignore their lyrics, I wouldn't bother listening to them. Bloody Kisses and October Rust are exceptions. Two of their best albums IMO.

I do want to say that Candlemass might be a classic band, but Death Magic Doom is something else. Like that album is honestly probably the most enjoyable thing they've ever done regardless of how they shaped the quintessential doom sound with tracks like Solitude.

There I go again not paying close attention...

Anyway Thrash glad we could help and since I got nothing better to do I'll drop a few more albums onto the pile

Confessor (traditional doom, closest thing I've yet heard to technical doom) - Unraveled
Virgin Black (Operatic Doom( - Elegant...And Dying
Mournful Congregation (funeral doom( - The Monad Of Creation, The June Frost
Atten Ash (Melodic doom/death) - The Hourglass
Swallow The Sun (doom/death) - Plague Of Butterflies
Unearthly Trance (I have a hard time categorising them in the doom spectrum) - Season Of Seance, Science Of Silence

Virgin Black is interesting, because I think they fail as a doom metal band, being rather average, but are at their best with dance vibes in their sound, i.e., when they are more experimental. Like on Walk Without Limbs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cc3uUMytbeI

I only have that one album of theirs and it took a few listens to really click. I think once you work out whether you like that sound or not they can't do much to change your opinion either way.

On my way back from lunch with the girlfriend I passed a new record store pumping out Possessed. Intrigued I decided to have a look and the bloke behind the counter (sounded older but it was a bit dark so I couldn't really tell) started chatting with me about the store. Turns out he was the owner and a veteran headbanger. Long story short he asked what sort of stuff I was looking for and I ended up walking out with:

Sinister - Cross The Styx
Malevolent Creation - The Ten Commandments
Massacra - Final Holocaust
