I need a better bass amp. Mine kinda sucks when I'm practicing with more than 1 guitarist. :(

Not really learning any songs, but I'm trying to learn the neck, how to walk across charts, how to read better, and how to tap some too. I also wanna work on general dexterity, but that's probably the easiest thing to work on. I picked up a Real Book recently, and those things come in massive handy. It has a ton of Jazz/Blues standards and songs, for those of you who don't know.

I'm also messing around a bit and writing some little chorales and stuff, just for my own personal benefit.

i've never liked extended range on guitars or bases... doesn't sound good imo. and both times i've played a five or six string bass i've found myself rarely even using the lower strings. low e is good enough for me

Hey I made a instrument-galerry thread when I first joined.. Will post pics of my gear later.. I have three guitars though: PRS SE Standard ESP LTD Eclipse Deluxe Schecter Playboy limited to 90 copies (It was cheap in my defense) My only amp is an old Peavy Classic.

I tried the drumming thing once. We use to go to my friends friend house. Spoiled rotten kid, but he was cool. We went over and "jammed" a couple times, I was getting better and better with each visit. Then he killed himself. I am no longer a drummer.

They are the melody line written on normal manuscript, with the chords written underneath. That's pretty much all you need to play jazz, but it's good for practicing walking, or general improv as well if you can understand what the chords mean. EDIT: So yeah, they can be used by any instrument that uses melody and harmony (so anything except drums or misc. percussion).

my mom has a Real Book. yay. i need to get a lot better at reading music and knowing chords before i can do much with it though. i do find the mix of sheet music and tab really annoying to read, a Radiohead book i have has that.

More strings, more possibilities. Remember Rusty Cooley playing that 8-string guitar. Crazy!! 8-string arpeggios. I'm an axeman myself, and now I'm practicing Cacophony's Concerto (of the Speed Metal Symphony album). I've an old Gibson, 10 years now, and a Marshall amp, MG series, 6 years old. I'm in the saving process for buying new equipment. I'm thinking Jackson or maybe Ibanez. I'm quite good at singing Black Metal and falsetto, but I prefer to sing in a mid-range style. My knowledge of bass and piano is very basic and limited.

I can't play properly on a 4 string bass, mainly as I've only really played 5 strings ha ha! I need to try find a pic of a bandmate's 7 string that he has. The thing is a monster :\|.

If you buy a 5 or 6 string for those few extra notes, then you're pretty much wasting your money. With a 4 string bass, you only get a range of an octave and a half in one position. With a 5 string, you get 2 octaves in one position, and with a 6 string, you get 2 and a half octaves out of one position. The extra strings are there to give the player more range out of one position, so you don't have to shift around the neck as much. 6 strings also allow the player more of a soloing opportunity. You can get more extended chord voicings out of a 6 string, as opposed to a 4 string where you can only have 4 note chords at a time. There are much more chordal opportunities with 6 strings, which I love, because bass chords are wonderful. And really, out of the 50 or so minutes I spent with the 6 string yesterday, I just loved the feel of it. Surprisingly, I didn't feel overwhelmed at all.
