For some reason Mr Cash manages to convey the emotion Mr Reznor completely lacks.

It's a conspiracy. Cash actually did it first.

Are you expressing surprise that Johnny Cash recorded a good song, or that NIN wrote one?

Well, I guess that's not quite as crazy as the former.

The NIN version is really good, IMO. The Cash one is definitely more emotional but the original has this experimental edge which is cool.

It just seems to mean so much more if it's Johnny Cash singing it. And I prefer the semi-country acoustic version to the industrial thingy any day.

It does have some extra gravitas, I guess, specially given that he probably new he was going to die imminently. His voice is far better than Reznor's as well.

Reznor's a fag.

Cash's version is most definately the superior one, because:

It's more stripped down and raw, and for a song so nakedly emotional, that's definately the way to go. The song works better without all the sound effects and electronic stuff that the original had. It gains much more in terms of emotional impact and pure power when it's just old broken-down Cash and his guitar, with a dash of piano for good measure. Cash's delivery is much more emotional too, sung from the point of view from an old man looking back on his regrets, there's more pure emotion in that than Trent Reznor, who is kind of a dick.

Don't get me wrong, the original is good too, but Cash's version completely overshadows the original in all ways. Cash really took the song and made it his own.

i like the Nine Inch Nails version more because it works so well as the closer to The Downward Spiral and i used to like them a lot when i was 15 so it's got lots of sentimental stuff attached. i do agree that Cash's has more class to it though.

Exactly. You really trust a source of information that allows people to change the In Flames entry into 'In Flaymz'?
