I can't decide between Slough Feg and Protest the Hero.

Good question. I really don't know.

"Given To The Rising" is my favorite Metal album of the past few years, so I'd be inclined to say Neurosis.

Yeah seriously.

The best metal is being made on the fringes of the death and black scenes. Cynic, Negura Bunget (RIP), Cobalt etc. etc. etc.

I really don't know, but I guess Slough Feg is a fair bet as far as heavy metal goes. They do create some of the best present heavy metal though, as nearly every other band I listen to has gone down the drain or has only released an album or three maybe, and thereby disbanded. I would also like to mention Dark Quarterer who play intelligent progressive metal, and as far as songwriting goes, they're possibly the best of their genre right now. Symbols was just dazzling.

I also tend to agree with Charles, as recent more ambient and atmoispheric black metal has made a HUGE impression on me including bands such as Enslaved, Wolves in the Throne Room, Altar of Plagues. Negura Bugent etc.

Progressive metal is, sadly, getting more and more boring except for a few bands (Dark Quarterer) that still keep reinventing the wheel. I used to LOVE this genre, but that emotion is slowly fading sadly. That said, Devin Townsend do create some of the most compelling music I've heard in a while. Dunno if that can be classified as metal, but still so soo good.

New thrash metal is fun to listen too once in a while, but I keep going back to the old, more obscure heroes here as well.

The best of metal was created in the 80s. That's what I keep going back to.

Cynic, of course, and post-black, atmospheric metal, as Wolves in the throne Room or Solstafir , is the most interesting metal actually.

My fav 2009, at this moment, is between Solstafir - Khold & Slough Feg - Ape Uprising

Then what are they? (Def more metal than Cynic's last one. :P)

Can't believe I forgot Neurosis. They're def up there, too.

Sure there is, they've gotta be out there somewhere!

It's way too subjective to make a final decision. You can only say what bands are making the metal you like most.

And yet nobody has named a better band than Protest the Hero , Neurosis,or Slough Feg! Except maybe Cynic but their album was so short, total cocktease.

Waits for Frigid to say Nickleback

Oh and Noodles I can think of a ton of bands that are better than PtH.

I was tempted, just to mess with you, but they're post-grunge (kind of like a simpler, catchier Collective Soul).

I really don't know... I haven't been keeping track of new bands and shit in the metal genre, but I'd probably say Eluveitie maybe?

I think the problem here might be with you rather than other people...

I dunno... There are some rules. I think you can say pretty objectively and with empirical backing that power metal is shit, for example.
