Post subject:  Synth Pop... Am I alone?

While I certainly have VERY limited knowledge on the genre... I love what I hear generally when I listen to synth pop. My definition of synth pop is probably too broad, and not correct, and would involve new wave bands as well.

I'm extremely huge on Depeche Mode, The Faint, old MGMT, Freezepop, and more bands that I'm forgetting to mention.

Anyone else a fan of the genre? If so, help me out and tell me more bands to listen to.

I'm also open to " You're a fag " comments, as well. Just keepin' in real here, gents. :D

I prefer Industrial, although I suppose you could make a claim for Ministry, Skinny Puppy and so on having synth pop elements. Overall, nah, prefer Aphex Twin etc

Look ahead as we pass, try and focus on it
I won't be fooled by a cheap cinematic trick
It must have been just a cardboard cut out of a man
Top forty cast off from a record stand

Walkin' in LA
Walkin' in LA, nobody walks in LA
Walkin' in LA
Walkin' in LA, nobody walks in LA

I don't know could've been a lame jogger maybe
Or someone just about to do the freeway strangler baby
Shopping cart pusher or maybe someone groovy
One thing's for sure, he isn't starring in the movies
'Cause he's walkin' in LA
Walkin' in LA, nobody walks in LA
Walkin' in LA
Walkin' in LA, only a nobody walks in LA

Walkin' walkin' walkin' walkin' walkin'
Nobody's walkin' walkin' walkin' walkin' walkin'
Nobody's walkin' walkin' walkin' walkin' walkin'
Nobody's walkin' walkin' walkin' walkin' walkin'

You won't see a cop walkin' on the beat
Nobody's walkin' walkin' walkin' walkin' walkin'

You only see 'em drivin' cars out on the street
Nobody's walkin' walkin' walkin' walkin' walkin'

You won't see a kid walkin' home from school
Nobody's walkin' walkin' walkin' walkin' walkin'

Their mothers pick 'em up in a car pool
Nobody's walkin' walkin' walkin' walkin'

Walkin' in LA
Walkin' in LA, nobody walks in LA
Walkin' in LA
Walkin' in LA, nobody walks in LA

Could it be that the smog's playing tricks on my eyes
Or is it a roller skater in some kind of headphone disguise
Maybe somebody who just ran out of gas
Making his way back to the pumps the best way he can

Walkin' in LA
Walkin' in LA, nobody walks in LA
Walkin' in LA
Walkin' in LA, nobody walks in LA
Walkin' in LA
Walkin' in LA, nobody walks in LA
Walkin' in LA
Walkin' in LA, only a nobody walks in LA

Nobody's walkin' walkin' walkin' walkin' walkin' (x6)

Nobody walks in LA

Tears for Fears is a wanna be American Depeche Mode, those con artists!

Kuruus, I haven't considered it... But I will at this point and time.

I don't really have anything against it, but I wouldn't say I'm a fan either. I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to buy a synth pop record or anything like that.

Although I do admittedly tend to enjoy some J-Pop.

I do enjoy Depeche Mode and some Erasure. Very long time since I have listened to them though. Barring Duran Duran, you won't find anything apart from rock/metal in my collection . I may pick up Depeche Mode some day.

Yeah. I was fucking around. My friend and I were really drunk one night at a bar, and kept rotating Depeche Mode and Tears for Fears on the juke and BSing with each other about them being Americanized Depeche Mode ripoffs... Got our other friends laughing and even the bartender.

Also, I wouldn't say that there's a HUGE gap between the two bands, in all seriousness. Maybe today, but back in the late 80's or early 90's or whatever they had some similarities.

You really should. Depeche Mode are an amazing band. A great place to start is their 2 disc set called " The Singles " ... I believe it has a decade or so of some of their best work.

Tears for Fears and Depeche mode like Black Sabbath and Motley Crue are.

Erasure, Depeche Mode, New Order (and to a lesser extent Pet Shop Boys). Those were the biggest and best synth bands from the 80s as I remember. New Order/Substance 1987 was the soundtrack to many a house party. Erasure's myspace re-mixes are crap - you will need to get the originals.

What? Those are actually very good albums... Down In The Park, Are Friends Electric?, Me! I Disconnect From You, practically every track on the Pleasure Principle... yeah, I like the stark minimalistic coldness that eminates from these albums.

edit:

greetings, salutations and whatnot... anything new?
