Well, you have a whole world to discover, I suggest to start for the beginning, the 70's stuff, to understand better the metal roots. Listen to the first album of Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Uriah Heep, etc. Then explore the NWOBHM. You've have music for three of four years there. After that you'll be able to understand Metal a little better. I remember when I was n00b, it's great in the sense that there's hundreds of bands to discover, and the searching for lost gems never ends. Good luck! And welcome. btw, you should introduce yourself in the "Profile of the Damned" (stupid name) thread. I do not consider myself damned, but blessed to be into Metal. |

It's a shame that you don't dig Black Sabbath, yet you like Led Z, whom imho are a much inferior band. If you want to hit the underground so badly, I'll give a few names from the top of my head. Helloween (80's stuff), Satan, Sabbath (the thrash band), Heathen, Forefather, Moonlyght, Lost Horizon, Hibria, Stratovarius, Deathspell Omega, Drudkh, Dark Tranquillity, Evergrey, Conception, Death, Overkill, Destruction, Kreator, Dream Theater, Darkthrone, Burzum, Peste Noire and Iced Earth (the first four albums). Try these bands, then tell us what you like and what you don't and we'll give more names. |

Mmm, that was a little too quick for your own good. Your making an opinion only based in tunes in MySpace I guess. Oh well... So, you don't like Melodic Speed, Power Prog and Black Metal. It seems you dig Thrash and Melodic Death, perhaps for the whole core so popular with youngsters these days. Like Legacy said, check Arsis, it's a very good band, though a little overrated by the forumites in this site. And I'm glad you liked Moonlyght, it's one of my fav bands ever, sadly they're disbanded now with only two albums. |

Wise choice, they suck indeed. The vocalist sounds like a teen girl being raped. |

Fuck you guys. I absolutely hated PtH when I first heard them, but over time I grew to love them. Don't write them off so easily. |

I say explore yourself if you want such broad suggestions. Otherwise we can narrow it down if you specify the genre of metal. Extreme metal is too vague. And don't write power/heavy metal off! |

metalNESS wrote: I say explore
Key word here: explore. Honestly, its pretty pointless for people to sit there and to demand lists of "good metal". The OP is obviously new to metal and I honestly question how much of this he is giving a good listen to and how much is just youtubing to see what catches his fleeting attention most. If you are enthusiastic about your prefered style of music then go out there and look for yourself. Go to shows, go to shops, check out distros, check out that wonderful place known as the Metal Archives, take the time to listen to albums through and through because if you're just listening to a song then passing it by you aren't giving that piece of work the listen it deserves. Go out and discover the music, don't wait for someone to give a list of ten million bands to check out. When I was a kid first getting into metal I would spent countless hours at HMV browsing and listening to albums at the listening stations even when I couldn't buy anything. I'd sit there on the floor in Chapters and read every fucking metal magazine (without buying any, mind you, much to the dismay of the workers there:P) I could get my hands on, and it was exciting as hell to discover new bands and moreso when those bands were truly great. I think you'll find it far more exhilirating to go out and discover music for yourself than to sit there waiting for people to give you a list to check out on youtube. |

Like Duchy said, it depends. If you're really interested in taking the first steps on a music path, stick around, explore for yourself! If not, at least check out Dam from London, who are awesome, and here are a couple more to impress your friends with: Scar Symmetry Akercocke Dream Theater Opeth Megadeth Napalm Death Carcass Soilwork Neurosis At least giving the kid something he might like will set him on the correct path, although I love the unspoken hint that everything we locals discuss here is BAD metal. The whole forum ain't the Heavy/Power section bro/sis. ![]() |
