Post subject:  Gimmicks vs. Musicianship (or making them both work)

Like it or not many of our favorite bands have a certain gimmick, this is to obviously be separated from a working musical formula. What are some of the obvious gimmicks that have made bands successful, i,e Nile's Egyptian shtick , Gwar's otherworldly alien getup, and Immortal's patently wacky Pro-wrestler paint? How does their image aid to their music, or should one separate the image entirely from the music itself? Does the image help distinguish the band from other similar groups, or does it just bring the band down even further?

Eddie for Iron Maiden is the first to come to mind.
Also, there are many gimmicks that make AC/DC concerts successful: the bell, the canons, angus' strip tease...

Alice Cooper was an innovater of this during the 70's. His stage shows, while not as elaborate as they are today, were pretty far off in left field for the time.

Nile's 'schtick' seems more interesting than generic death metal lyrics, and has served as a great base for far more epic tracks than traditional death metal songs. Sanders goes to great lengths to explain the lyrics and stories within his music, making for some of the best linear notes I've ever seen.

Has their angle granted them undue popularity over the years? Up to the eye of the beholder. However, not everyone that likes them is ignorant of death metal at large...

They're entertainers. Unless they decide not to play live like Deathspell Omega or Shadow Gallery, they should use all the gimmickry and parafernalia they want if that makes their live presentations more fun. The last week I went to a Rammsteing gig and it was a lot of fun, the music was shit but the show was really good. I remember a live DVD of Dark Tranquillity, in Poland I think... boring as hell. The musicians were very static, without energy. Shit.
