I think here with about 98% of the posters being against brutal death, that no one will obviously opt for being a fan of piggy vocals. But for those who at least derive some moderate enjoyment of distorted vocals, who are your favorite vocalists and what are your favorite techniques that they utilize to make them unique. If you want to pull an Adverser, how does the production make him sound diabolical or during albums can you hear the studio back his vocals up.

Distorted vocals is kinda an ambiguous term isn't it? I don't listen to brutal death metal often and hence like a neophyte enjoy Argon's vox on Circle of Nine.

At least spell my name right, you dipshit :)

Production doesn't have jack shit to do with distorting vocals unless the singer doesn't know what they are doing. Not in that sense anyway.

I don't know what you mean either. You can control the gain, distortion and tone of the voice totally independent of pitch, so it's just a matter of adding more distortion and gain.

Chuck Billy's regular voice's gain is about an 7 and about a 3 for distortion and his Death Metal vocals are about a 3 on gain and a 5 on distortion.

yeah well...

I always liked the vox on Empire of Blood... I generally prefer the howling wind black metal shreik with plenty of reverb as long as it is not too dominant (I like vox relatively low in the mix)

Also Cronos has it down just about right.

As much as I like low death growls, I think the old school, quasi-shrieking vocals in the vein of Autopsy and Death are better than what everyone does today.
I like to hear the words instead of what seems like mumbling.

When it comes to mixing, I like having it near the middle to lower middle.

If you can't make out what they're saying it's pointless. It's a far more "evil" or "brutal" thing to understand clearly the point that the vocalist is trying to get across as opposed to RUUUUUU BREE BREE URRRRRRRR and so on.

Not really. 95% of lyrics are stupid anyway. Using the vocals as an additional instrument in the background seems far superior to me than those awful Arch Enemy choruses.

I've always been a fan of Muhammad from Necrophagist. I don't listen to much death metal, but he just sees like a master of the low gurggled death growl.
