There are always some albums that have an overproduced buzzing bass tuning, case example being Rottrevore's sole album in old school death metal. Cryptopsy's None So Vile while having an extraordinary technicality to the playing, has an annoying tuning during the chugging moments. What are some albums outside of the more extreme genres, that have a bass tuning that makes you want to tear your ears out. |

Intronaut! Death! Devin Townsend! Also, None So Vile's bass sound is awesome. Can't think of an annoying one off the top of my head, to be honest, because in most Metal it's just hard to hear the bass in the first place. |

God, I wish I found this thread earlier. I love that overproduced bass sound, as long as there is some note definition (Suffocation - Souls to Deny, Blood Oath). I find the sound on Tombs of the Mutilated to resemble a rubber band. I think that while the bass may be seemingly drowned out by the guitars a lot, it is very important to the overall heaviness of most kinds of metal (probably not black metal). Every live show I have seen, the bass sounds much louder and up front than the recording. That includes bands with great bass players (Necrophagist) to really run of the mill players like the guy from Six Feet Under. |
