The two most obvious types of extremity in the music, are lyrical and of course the sonic aspect of metal. With the genre having expanded since the early nineties and late eighties, and modern bounds attempting to push the boundaries of the genre's forefathers, do you see metal getting more extreme? Though of course for those of you who dislike the more extreme bands, you'd probably see that downtuning and playing faster riffs has already been done ad infinitum. But for those who prefer the other genres how do you see power/prog/doom getting more extreme as well?

Sonically, don't think so. Can't really get louder or faster... maybe weirder and more unsettling with dramatic volume shifts and no steady beats and stuff... like Raxinasky or whatever.

Lyrically is definitely a possibility. I remember finding Vehemence's lyrics on God Was Created significantly creepier than your average DM band's.

I don't think we can go any further lyrically. I mean, if fucking a dead baby shortly after cutting it out of her pregnant mother's belly and then eating it isn't the limit, then I don't know what is.

Musically I would say there is a slim chance. I always think "this is the heaviest shit I've heard", but then I hear Sunn O))), Portal and shit like that, and get blown away. Literally. It could happen.

I hope not. I think it may even go the other way.

I think through good old fashioned song writing it's possible. For a lot of modern death metal it's all about playing faster or more technical and I don't see that style getting much more extreme. But there are still some quality bands that wield song writing as their main instrument (such as Immolation) and that can always leave a mark.

Hat-tip to Bloodpet, that was my initial response too. I agree with Kathy, though. There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in our philosophy...

The only way I can see it getting more extreme is in the use of lower quality recordings, like that of Portal.

All the new tech death bands don't seem super extreme to me because the production is too clean and it doesn't sound as heavy as it could.

But I guess the only other way it could be more extreme is to completely shun any sense of melody at all.

I'd say no.

I doubt it can get more extreme lyrically either. Some grind bands have already got gay porn lyrics or peadophile stuff.

Most of these bands are the most extreme you can get musically too (e.g. Intense Hammer Rage).

I imagine more and more distancing from standard music structures towards stuff more like noise a la Sunn or Portal. Lyrics are always an odd measure of extreme-ness to me.

I like how descriptions of homosexuality is more extreme than heterosexuality to dead1. The pedophile stuff is fucked up and I really have no desire to listen to that shit. Fucking immature or just simply fucked up.

haha but seriously, i don't think it will. But more sub Genre's of Death metal and such like i can see a combination of death metal/deathcore with dubstep happening in the future. Big Chocolate from Disfiguring the goddess has already kinda of did that already with his dubstep project. I honestly can't wait for this to happen.

Prepare for the hate. I'm on the same page though, boss. First Degree Revolution title track with the real djent-y and industrial riffs is awesome. Check out Commissioner with BigC and the Suicide Silence singer.

Obviously lyrically one can't get any further, though bands such as Opthalamia would disagree as they've invented their own lyrical/mythological worlds. I would say that accounts for something as opposed to lyrical garbage from the likes of shitty bands like Catasexual Urge motivation and Cesspool of Vermin.

Given that a lot of metalheads I've met are very homophobic, bands singing about homosexuality are indeed more extreme.

Frankly I don't want to listen to bands singing about having sex (and it's usually violent sex) with anyone or anything.
