The situation usually is present when a band returns from a hiatus, and the level of expectations for their new album may be mixed to a possible uneasy feeling. I can recall this for Once was Not and Lord Worm's return, yet once we got around the nausea, the album proved to be a lot better than initially thought. What are some albums that received a nasty original conception, yet through the releasing of samples, a resurgence of interest, or gaining new fans that earned the respective band a better response.[/i]

First album that comes to my mind was My Dying Bride's return to death/doom form with "The Light At the End of the World" after their more experimental stuff.

I remember a lot of people expected "34.78% complete" with a few harsh vocals: what they got, as far as I am concerned, is the beginning of their second great period.

So many people have dissed this album and labeled it as a wannabe-Depeche Mode. I think it has more depths and ideas than most metal-related albums released this year. It's not their best, sure, but it's pretty close.

I don't get how an album can be supposedly horrible while getting a warm response.

You should read Steve's original post once again.
