| Post subject: | The state of metal |
What is your opinion on the state of metal? What would you like to see metal bands do in the future? Are you happy with what's coming out right now as far as releases? Do you think metal has a real future or do you see it dying out and it having already progressed as far as it can progress? |

I think the future looks pretty bleak for most metal subgenres. Metal itself, I'm not sure about. |

i can see it all becoming generic bullshit or the following: completely dying out in 10-20 years, it will be fused with techno/dubstep and i can see shoegaze carrying atleast black metal for a good couple more years then most metal Genre's. But who knows, the future isn't written yet. |

I like it. I have no problems. Bands are doing new things while there are bands who are still doing the same old, same old. Throwback bands will keep it alive while bands like Ulcerate and Akercocke, to name only two of many, add amazing nuances to the classic sound while there are those bands who do radically new things, your Liturgys and iwrestledabearonces who sometimes just sound awful but when it clicks, it's awesome. The struggle of pushing limits is going to fall on its face at times but as long as there are great bands maintaining the old guard then let those goofy bands keep doing there thing. I don't see how the influence of electronic music or dubstep is any different than its earlier influence on bands like The Kovenant or The Berzerker. It's a trend, only certain bands will attempt it and only a few will be good at it like Berzerker. |

Maybe in the next few years, we'll have a crazy new fusion sub-genre. Like blackened pop-punk or melodic progressive doom metal. |

Too too too much black metal and related. Seems like sludge is the second trendiest thing going on so that's good. I wish harsh vocals were an exception rather than the norm. Also seems like lots of trad doom and heavy metal around, which I approve of. Plenty of room left to explore imo |

yeah, I've said this elsewhere but it would be super duper awesome if bands from other genres start adopting metal as an influence and then make weird fusions that way. Or, bands start playing riffs from other genres with metal distortion and heaviness. I would really like it if more fun but good metal bands were around. Only good one now is Protest the Hero, imo. |

Needs more catchiness, dumbed down song structures, female vocals, lyrics about self-empowerment, rapping, more sugary choruses, and damn those blast beats they hurt my ears. |

I feel like for every band that blends another genre with metal well, there's tons and tons that do it horribly. It's hard to make it not sound like a gimmick. |

I will take singing to a new level with my unbelieveable 8 octave range. (E(-1) to E7) That should help. First there was Halford, then there was Tate, then Tyranti, and now I shall usher in virtuosity the likes have never been heard before. You guys don't read the lyrics to your favorite albums. They are all waiting on the chosen one. Perhaps he has arrived. Also: Can do death metal, harsh, female and black metal vocals. |

I'm stil convinced these people write music to inspire me, personally, because we made a deal on the other side that we would each have a piece of the puzzle to remind each of us of why we chose to come here. I really enjoy a lot of the offspring black metal bands that have come out. Altar of Plagues is one to mention. Not really into the American bands like Krallice and Liturgy though. Kvelertak is a band that I think gives hope to metal. Their debut record was phenomenal and I was able to catch them live at a small venue and it was fantastic. |

Doomsayers have always existed and will always exist, metal isn't really in any trouble. I remember 10 years ago people saying the same things, and I can't even imagine a metal landscape without all the phenomenal releases that have hit us in the last decade. In the last year alone bands like In Solitude, Sorgeldom, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Azarath, and others have released albums that I will most likely be listening to for years to come. Obviously we all have different tastes, but things are looking good from where I'm standing. |

I would actually differ with you slightly and say simply, as long as there is a vibrant underground releasing solid albums that this qualifies enough for being alive. While the bands you have listed are upstanding, I think its a rather pretentious view taken on this and many other forum that a more extreme band has to introduce extraneous elements to make their music more palatable. Certain ears who have very little business making criticism of the music, would rather hear bands such as those altogether while making sweeping decisions on underground bands who do not make such easy listening music. |
