Obviously it happens a lot, especially when coming across a new band.
But if it persists after several spins, I can't really tell that I enjoy the music, even if I know that it IS good. I find myself never in a mood hearing any of these albums.

So, what do you think, is it acceptable from your perspective, or is it merely an indicator of a mediocre music?

Some examples
Cradle of Filth - Damnation and a day
Dark tranquility - character
A lot of Rotting Christ's and Amon amarth's stuff...
...and most of funeral doom genre.

If after a few spins you can't differentiate the songs, then I think the album is at best mediocre and at worst rubbish.

But some people perfer soundscapes or general atmosphere over individual sounding songs.

Yes. This is why I love funeral doom. It's the space that the music creates, not the riffs or the vocals.

That said, you have to be in a very specific mood to listen to this stuff, and I guess some people never experience those moods :)
