this is a thread I particularly enjoyed from the other forum I'm on so thought I'd try here

rate the song from 0 (being in your opinion the most atrocious thing you have ever heard) to 10 (being one of the best songs you have heard) doesn't just have to be metal either

I'll start with this

Weak vocals, meandering riffs, but a nice thrash break that saves the song from utter crap. Schuldiner's vocals had grown weak at the point of the release of The Sound of Perseverance, and the album itself is a piece of shit aside from Spirit Crusher and the cover of Painkiller.

7/10 very enjoyable with some thrashy hints, may have to look into Gorefest a little more

by the way I disagree with you about Sound Of Perseverance but we can argue about that elsewhere

You'll find that you disagree with a lot of his opinions. They're "controversial".

Sound of Perseverance is amazing.

Reclusiam - Litanies of Rust and Decay. God, that was boring. Crushed me right to sleep. Funeral doom has such an awesome chance to really break out of the drudge and speed it up and the contrast would be awesome, but no.

Quite the opposite. ANb's Miscommunication.

0/10 nothing but noise to me, mercifully it was about the shortest "song" I have ever endured

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nrLvde71kc

you do realise extreme slowness is kind of the point with funeral doom right? if you want "faster" doom there's a rather large quantity of doom/death bands out there, not to mention the traditional doom bands such as Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus, plus stoner doom bands like Cathedral and Electric Wizard

Sympathy - On a Bloodied Cross. Not bad, thrashy death metal. The solo towards the end didn't do much for me, though. 6/10.

As for funeral doom, I know my doom. In fact, love me some doom, but that did nothing for me. Doom only works it if has a strong riff to carry it or a contrasting pick up of the pace to pull me in. I don't like my doom meandering. And as for Agoraphobic Nosebleed, that riff is sick and then the breakdown with Kat Katz screams, fucking brutal.

Jesus Christ DI, that was awesome! Great US heavy metal, awesome riffs. Would definitely prefer some more vocal work though.

8/10 easily.

Sounds like Thin Lizzy but the vocalist is weak. Nice riffs and melodies.

7/10

EDIT: the song Nima posted is pure steel. Need to check more Dawnbringer asap. I concur with Thomas about the vocal work. I was expecting a singer in the vein of Doomsword or Atlantean Kodex.

Quite good there, Alex. I could've done with a better clean vocalist. In terms of the music itself--it's indeed very good--melodies, drumming, intricacy, progressiveness, mood and atmosphere. My score: 7.75/10. Very solid.

Edit: Yeah, I know. That song could have done with more vocalization.

I didn't know you were into that kind of old school Heavy Metal :) Thought you liked only obscure and esoteric bands.

I love Old-school as long as it's done very well. You have to come back to the light once in a while for sure :)

EDIT: I prefer being in the light for now...

Forteresse - Métal Noir Québécois

My experience with Forteresse begins with Crepuscule D' Octobre, and this isn't all that different to be honest except slightly harsher with tinges of Darkthrone's more drawn out tremolo picking. That's what I enjoy about these guys is that their songs are drawn out, yet as opposed to some of the more melodic parts of Crepuscule the main riff is a little meaner sounding. The song doesn't change much after the first three minutes, and this is more or less what I expect from this band decent material.

Deadly Blessing - Cry of Medusa

Seems like we are posting bands with poor vocalists today :P

This song might be an 8 with a better vocal performance. Btw, this band was completely unknown to me. A poorer version of Liege Lord or Omen.

@Alex: Moments of pure Bliss on that song and album as a whole. 8

Edit: @Stefan: Solastafir is just a brilliant band. 8
