Post subject:  Metal Cruises: your opinion...
I've never been on one, just seems to be a waste of time & money unless you're really wanting to take a cruise and you like just about all generes of Metal. I just can't imagine making the financial/time commitment to see maybe only a handful of bands I like. But I've no doubt that many people have had a great time attending them. They are certainly proliferating, ... what's your take?

Can barely afford concerts let alone a cruise to see bands. I don't even really like metal fans. I don't think I'd want to be on a boat full of them.

They're pricey but the lineup is fucking ace especially for 70,000 tons of metal the lineup one year was fucking insane. Sanctuary, Marduk, Suffocation basically bands I'd fucking love to see. If you have the money go for it, and buy merch for us folk to buy back from you!

Yeah, I know the feeling bro. Most metalheads are quite narrow-minded and elitist. Anyway, if I had the money, I would go for it like Steve said. A lot of weed always helps to make people more interesting than they are.

Sodom did the 70,000 tons cruise once. Running Wild was there that year too. I totally would of went on that cruise.

Metalheads in Australia are pretty cool, actually. They like to get drunk as fuck, and there's a sense of camaraderie, especially at extreme metal shows.

If there was a cruise full of Australian metalheads, they would a lot of paramedics on board to treat all the alcohol poisoning, and that just sounds like a good ol' time to me.

Aussie metal gig crowds are pretty cool and much better behaved than the crowds at mainstream rock gigs (and even soft acoustic stuff ala Angus and Julia Stone. :blink: )

That said, I did find it depressing having Metalhead friends. There was too much 15-year old bitchy teenage girl behaviour (and these were grown men aged 20-40).

People'd get sledged for listening to particular styles or bands. There was constant bitching. It was all just too depressing.

I found I was enjoying metal less and less. When I stopped hanging out with metal heads, my love of the music came back.

Oh, yeah. I can agree with that. I don't keep any metal heads as friends, unless you count the wonderful arseholes that inhabit these boards.

But as temporary drunken friends at a show, or on a cruise perhaps, they are awesome.

The only metalhead friends I have are the same group of guys I see at shows in Toronto. They are incredibly stupid, but good guys nonetheless.

I just wish I had a friend a little closer to home who I just throw in some thrash and rock the fuck out with. My friend nick kinda came around, likes Overkill, Megadeth, Maiden, Sabbath, Priest, etc... But he also likes Rascal Flatts and Billy Idol. So yeah, as cool as he can be, it can also be pretty painful.

Metal camraderie is kinda awesome, but besides scumbag and the hardcore punk scene in Cincy who were exceptionally knowledgeable about metal I don't really like dudes into metal. There is a guy in my dept who digs metal, but he doesn't have the encyclopedic knowledge I have and so I'm always awkward when he asks me what I'm listening to because I'm like "ummm a side project of Reverend Bizarre playing avant garde drone". If I could just shut the fuck up and say Red Fang or Municipal Waste I would be fine.

Problem is though Metalheads are arseholes who want to ruin your fun. *

*A generalisation I know!

E.g. I had friends who hated Iced Earth. One day I played Iced Earth's Dark Saga in the car and they really liked it.

Next time the conversation came on about Iced Earth, they were back to their "Iced Earth is crap" routine.

Or bagging people out as posers for listening to certain music.

They were also pathological liars who lied simply to put people down. E.g. one guy I knew lied and said he saw Slayer live just to put down a guy who was excited about seeing them live.


And finally I actually got called a homosexual by a Death Metal guy for liking Thrash!

There were some guys that were cool but overall the local scene was poisonous.

Most likely a local thing too but it was sad that the community had so many issues.

Majority of metalheads I know are really nice folks, even when drunk! Something like this would be pure fun. Might have to go on dialysis when you get back .. but would be fun nonetheless.

Only downside I can see is probably the male to female ratio ..
