 Post subject: Great Cover Songs
PostPosted: Sat Mar 03, 2007 11:27 pm
I posted this on another forum. I figured some people here may dig on these. I know we've done a thread like this one before, but this time I think it would be cool if people could upload some tunes. Not full albums of covers or anything, just individual tracks that kick ass. Please don't just post lists, that's dreadfully boring.

Anyway, here are some of my favorites (downloadable):

SONATA ARCTICA - STILL LOVING YOU (Scorpions)
HAMKA - TORNADO OF SOULS (Megadeth)
ERIC KNIGHT BAND - FOOLIN' (Def Leppard)
STILL REMAINS - HEAD LIKE A HOLE (NIN)
SOLITUDE AETURNUS - HALLOWED BE THY NAME (Iron Maiden)
SHADOWS FALL - WELCOME TO THE MACHINE (Pink Floyd)
KITTIE - RUN LIKE HELL (Pink Floyd)
ION VEIN - TAKE HOLD OF THE FLAME (Queensryche)
TRIXIE - WASTED (Def Leppard)
SOLARSIS - NOTHING ELSE MATTERS (Metallica)
BESEECH - GIMME GIMME GIMME (ABBA)
ELIS - HEAVEN AND HELL (Black Sabbath)
KILLSWITCH ENGAGE - HOLY DIVER (Dio)
HYDROGYN - 18 & LIFE (Skid Row)
LULLACRY - HEAD LIKE A HOLE (NIN)
STRAPPING YOUNG LAD - EXCITER (Judas Priest)
BLACK SYMPHONY - DELIVERANCE (Queensryche)

As you can see, I love cover tunes. I don't keep many ripped songs/albums on my PC, but I have a folder specifically for my favorite cover songs. I always love a good, true cover, but I really love when bands change things up a bit. For instance, Sonata Arctica's power metal cover of "Still Loving You," or Solarsis' melodic death metal version of "Nothing Else Matters," or both covers of NIN's "Head Like A Hole," and Elis' gothic metal version of "Heaven And Hell." Some I consider better than the originals, like Solitude Aeturnus' cover of "Hallowed Be Thy Name" (that's right, I said it!). And I always give props to bands who can pull off good Def Leppard covers, managing to nail the harmonies!

also, there's a one off (i think) live cover band thingy featuring Flo Mounier, a member or two of Voivod and some other Canadian metallers that covered Metallica, Slayer, Voivod and some other bands, it's called Black Cloud, if you want i can upload that as well.

EDIT 2 - copy+paste the links, they'll work.

oh yeah and i heard Solitude Aeternus's cover of "Hallowed be Thy Name" when you posted it in a news thread about said band (i think), and it's fucking awesome. i daresay the vocals give Bruce Dickinson a run for his money on that one.

I can appreciate covers for what they are, but the problem is that they often come far from the greatness of the originals. That Skid Row cover for example, I can appreciate for what it is, it's different from the original and quite nice actually, but at the same time I get the urge to listen to the original instead, just because it's so awesomely good.

And that Norther cover of Smash was appalingly bad, but I guess that's the point though  I love the energy of the original though.

That is probably the best cover of Hallowed Be Thy Name I've heard thus far however. Even though I love Iced Earth their version isn't really that great, the only thing that's great about it is Barlow's performance actually. And Cradle Of Filth's version was total suckage.

Adagio - Fame (Irene Cara)

I can't find a link to the song, but anybody who hasn't checked out Dominate by Adagio needs to be punched in the ear.

Well I like covers that are pretty original...I don't like bands covering everything exactly. I prefer originality in it a bit. More like covering in their own signature ways.

Cradle of Filth - Hell Awaits (Slayer)
Cradle of Filth - Hallowed be thy Name (Iron Maiden)
Dimmu Borgir - Burn in Hell (Twisted Sister)
Therion - The King (Accept)
Therion - Summernight City (ABBA)
Sil Khannaz - Diary of a Madman (Ozzy Osbourne)
Sil Khannaz - Seek and Destroy (Metallica)
Children of Bodom - Aces High (Iron Maiden)
Children of Bodom - Oops I did it Again (Bitchy Spears)

Sil Kannaz is a Malaysian Death Metal band. But they had a guest vocalist to cover those two songs. A really good band. Do check them out, I'll try to upload some of their songs soon.

I've got a lot more favourite covers but can't think of all of them at the moment.

Speaking of non Metal covers, Johnny Cash's version of NIN's Hurt is superlative. Now that's depressive for you.

This is great ! Will check out those tracks. Was curious to know about SA's cover of HBTN. It will be my first experience with that band. Haven't listened to them, but heard a lot about them.
