Sure, comparing this album to Always… would be like comparing Michael Jackson’s face today to his face in the Seventies, but in the progression of the band this is just a slight nose job, noticeably different, but still a similar face

Muchos gracias for those samples, I'll take the journey later. And what I've heard about this, it's their worst yet. Would you agree?

I don't know, worst yet?, it's hard to say. I think Almost A Dance is probably their worst album because the singer was a bit weird-sounding. I would say that out of the Anneke-fronted albums this is my least enjoyable album, but it's all relative because it's still very good. Saying it's their worst album, to me, isn't much of a negative comment.

I like the album, but I'll listen to it more when I'm in the mood for something like Sarah McLachlan, Tara Maclean or Tori Amos, I guess. It's just very mellow and low-key, but it's still very good.

From the relatively small amount I've heard of the band, all has been good. And mellow is good, especially Sarah McLauchlan mellow. She is a great vocalist (Anneke).

Anneke is amazing. She was awesome on Mandylion and Nighttime Birds, but on How To Measure A Planet? she was jaw-droppingly stunning. At that point it just seemed like the band realized her voice was more than just a voice, an instrument, and they had that in mind when they wrote the album.

And yes, they really have no bad albums.

This is my favourite Gathering album now, replacing Souvenirs.

I can't see why Mandylion is considered so good, unless you're a gothic fan who resents where they've taken their music. This album is just so damn relaxing I love it. Kind of sounds like Ambeon's Fate of a Dreamer in places.
The main thing to note is that this is not metal. It's ambient rock if anything but when you add Anneke's voice it becomes some of the best damn music around.

I gave it 95/100, because there's an annoying quiet bit after the track Home before you get to Forgotten Reprise. Favourite track is Your Troubles Are Over

I noticed that, too, it's almost like "Forgotten (Reprise)" was intended to be a hidden track after "Home" but in the end someone made it a track in its own right. The silence after "Home" is out of place. I think "Alone" is an awesome tune, it's so weird for them.

I've been thinking of trying this band for a long time. Those samples will surely help. Thanks Ken.

Nice to see that we have the same taste for those female singers, but I don't know Tara Maclean. Actually I also listen to Norah Jones.

I like this album from The Gathering... damn... I like them all! muhahahah :D

Tara Maclean is awesome! Find the album Silence. You won't be disappointed at all!

That's a fan-made Youtube with the song "Evidence" playing in the background.

Heard the samples, realised I'd heard a few songs before (Charles sent me Strange Machines, and I checked out their website a long time ago). This is exactly the kind of thing I like, I'll be getting stuff by them (was previously waiting to find Mandylion). Good review, Kenobi.

I'm here all week. If you've heard Mandylion I'd suggest the album you get be How To Measure A Planet?; that is sort of the center of the Anneke years, I think.

I've only heard Strange Machines, to be honest. As I said, whatever comes first'll be good. Can't always get things in order.

This was decent, but admittedly not my style of music to begin with. I need to give it some more listens, cos it kind of went to the back of my mind, cos it didnt grab me by the balls instantly.

The only The Gathering I ever listen to is If Then Else, their other albums are good but I don't really need more than 1 by them.

lol, but they are serously not that good. They are rather disjointed and have no flow. Mandylion and Nighttime Birds ARE that good.

Pffft!™ ©Eyesore 2006. You're crazy. They are that good, but I can see how someone would find it hard to sort of travel with them on their little musical journey. Mandylion and Nighttime Birds are two very different albums from what they've done since. It doesn't, however, mean that what they're doing now is bad. In fact, it's very, very good and not disjointed at all when listening to the specific albums. Take their entire discography together and, yeah, it's very disjointed.
