This is so much better than Embrace The Silence. The main reason being that it is whole 30 minutes shorter. Embrace The Silence had 5 awesome songs in all and with its length made the listening even harder. What this band does amazing though is writing ballads. Embraced and Breath are two of my favorite power ballads ever and Surrender from the new album is just as good.

I have a hard time calling them prog though. VP have a very simple, very melodic, very emotional (thanks to the singer), almost pop sound which many people can't seem to accept. It's from this that I think some people are calling them "typical".

Yeah I wouldn't even really call them metal, I'd say more prog rock/ hard rock leaning more towards the latter. There isn't a whole lot of prog.

I also agree that they write some of the best ballads, and I frikin hate ballads.

Well, I wasn't impressed after I listened to one of their songs on their Myspace page...

Regardless of what genre Vanishing Point fit into (I really believe they are Metal), this 2007 album is probably the album of the year. Excellent CD and excellent review. This band is on top of its game (with the 2005 release and, now, this one).

Vanishing Point are a band that will most likely appeal more to fans of melodic rock and Power Metal as opposed to Prog and heavier genres. Yes, they are "light" when putting them next to a band like Stormwarrior but their penchant for writing catchy songs without sounding too formulaic or wussy is their strength. Give this band a shot and avoid misconceptions about typicality when going in for a listen. If you don't end up diggin em, bust out some Manowar.

I think my problem is, that i am way to picky...many of the defining bands of the genre power metal, does not appeal to me...allthough it is the genre i enjoy the most...examples are nocturnal rites, manowar and blind guardian..

Really don't think this album is 2007s best release others like Araman's Plight - Voice in the light(DC Cooper) are better.

I checked out Embraced and Breath, and you're spot on. Outstanding songs! I'm psyched to have discovered this band. Going to have to pick this new album up.

You know, I really love the first album, but when I tried to listen to a more recent effort (it wasn't this album) a couple years ago, as a promo, it must have rubbed me the wrong way somehow. Now that my musical tastes have changed a little bit and expanded, I'll definitely give them another try. This doesn't surprise me that I passed over on the promo because of the style in how I select promo's to listen to or ignore, I'll have to be more careful in the future.

This album is one in few "progressive" (whatever that means) power metal albums that I found "subtle." No cheese in sight. Good lyricism, dense, layered, dynamic, not on the top vocalization, nothing too flamboyant that remains to be poetic, rather on the darkside yet hopeful and uplifting. I wouldn't call this generic by any standards.
