All right Ben... Well, good luck. I just do wish you'd take this slightly less seriously, for your own good. The point of playing an instrument should be first and foremost to have fun; if your goal is to be the next Steve Harris, you are likely going to be disappointed, because as Kelly said, doing that sort of thing takes a lot of talent, a lot of creativity, and a lot of luck. Once again, good luck, and enthusiasm is great, but I'd reconsider on the "either I play central park or I'm a failure!" because I don't think thats a very realistic goal or what playing an instrument should be about.

Yeah, like Pheobe. Ooooh, Central Park.

Yeah, I still really don't like this editorial but some of Ben's older ones are great.

Right. Three things you cannot teach yourself, unlike technique. You either have them or not.

I'm against the whole idea that "you're born with this" or whatever. Sure you might not be a savant like Mozart or something who writes operas at age 10, but you can teach yourself to be good at guitar, and you can work out your creative muscle, just like lifting weights. Luck is mostly illusionary anyway.

I agree with Legacy. Creativity isn't given to some people and not to others. If you love making music then you'll be able to make good music. It's the passion, desire, and determination that matters. :) .

It's the persistence that a lot of people lack.

To be good in any field needs preseverance, and work.
to be great, you need preseverance, work and talent.

Anyone can be good, but few can be great (in any field).

But the important thing is not if you're good, great or nothing, the thing that matter is having fun and being happy.

I disagree. Thats not to say that you can't get better at creativity with practice, and that either you're born with all of your creative juices on or you're not. But there are some aspects of songwriting that can't be learned no matter what (trust me, as a failure of a songwriter, I know) and there are some people who just are naturally better at songwriting and have a natural intuition for where notes should go than others.

100% agreed. :dio:
